Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Saint Michael’s

Beauregard averaged a team high .714 at the plate in the two games, 5-for-7

COLCHESTER, Vermont (April 8, 2021) – The Stonehill College baseball team (6-5, 3-5 NE10) split the doubleheader Thursday afternoon with Saint Michael's College (1-4, 1-3 NE10), as the two teams wrapped up their four-game Northeast-10 Conference series at Doc Jacobs Field.

Both teams went down three-straight batters in the first inning, as Stonehill put up the first run of the game in the top of the second. Lucier doubled to right center with two outs and Beauregard drove him home with his first hit of the day, 1-0. The Purple Knights saw Mitchell Goulet homer to left field in the bottom of the frame to tie the game, 1-1.

After three scoreless innings, Saint Michael's got runners on first and second with one out, as Moran doubled to right center giving them their first lead, 3-1. Brendan Kelly retired the inning with two strikeouts.

The Skyhawks' solo run in the top of the seventh off Maher's RBI single was not enough as the Purple Knights' defense stood strong and fended off a long fly ball from Conor Kiely to end the game.

Key Moments:

Beauregard led off the Skyhawks in the top of the third with a double to left field and with one out, Maher tripled to deep right center to give Stonehill a 1-0 lead. The Purple Knights picked up two runs in the bottom of the fourth for a one-run advantage, 2-1.

In the top of the sixth, the Skyhawks' Lidsky blasted a solo homerun, his first-collegiate shot, down the left field line to tie the game, 2-2. Stonehill then opened the game up with six runs in the top of the seventh on three hits and two errors. The Skyhawks loaded the bases three times and saw hits from Beauregard, Lidsky, and Kiely in the inning to put them up six runs, 8-2.

Saint Michael's put up a run in the bottom of the frame, 8-3, as Stonehill answered with three runs in the top of the eighth, 11-3, on four walks, a hit by pitch, and a single from Beauregard. The Skyhawks held the Purple Knights to two runs in the bottom of the eighth, 11-5, as Iset Maldonado doubled to center field driving in Cianciolo and Brady Perron.

The Skyhawks squeezed in two more runs in the top of the ninth, as Kiely's 2-run single up the middle scored Beauregard and Lucier with two outs. Tyler Marshall recorded two strikeouts in the later half of the inning to keep the Purple Knights off the base, as the pitching staff of Duff, Matt Smith, Tom Connor, Logan Lawrence, and Marshall combined for 12 strikeouts in the game.

Stonehill hosts Assumption University this weekend for four games starting on Saturday, April 10 at Lou Gorman Field with a first pitch slated for 1:00 p.m. The Sunday, April 11th doubleheader is scheduled to begin at noon.
