Vo, O'Donnell and Ray lead Skyhawks as double-winners

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (September 25, 2016) – Stonehill College, ranked sixth in the Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, claimed its seventh straight win to maintain its perch atop the Northeast-10 Conference standings with a 9-0 sweep of American International College in NE-10 women's tennis action at Springfield Cathedral High School this afternoon.

Junior Colleen O'Donnell (Waterville, Maine/Waterville) and freshmen Alexandra Vo (Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania/Nazareth Academy) and Caroline Ray (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) led Stonehill to the victory as double-winners for the afternoon. Vo teamed up with junior captain Victoria Barbetta (Wesley Chapel, Florida/Saddlebrook Prep) for an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles and then added a 7-5, 6-1 decision over American International sophomore Carleyah McLean (Pickering, Ontario/Dunbarton) at No. 1 singles.

O'Donnell combined with freshman Carolina Alvarez (Orlando, Florida/Freedom) for an 8-0 sweep at No. 2 doubles before breezing to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles against postgrad Logan Smith (Southwick, Massachusetts/Holyoke Catholic). Ray was a double-winner for the first time in her collegiate career, posting an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles with junior captain Janet Haas (Northbridge, Massachusetts/Northbridge). She followed that up with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles to clinch the fifth and deciding point for the Skyhawks.

Juniors Emma Prinos (Foxboro, Massachusetts/Foxboro) and Melissa Parker (Madison, Connecticut/Daniel Hand) and sophomore Nicole Downey (Groveland, Massachusetts/Pentucket Regional) all added singles wins for Stonehill. Downey posted a straight sets win at No. 2 singles, while Prinos won at No. 3 and Parker didn't drop a game at No. 6.

Stonehill (7-1, 7-0 NE-10) returns to the courts on Thursday when it visits Saint Anselm College for a Northeast-10 match at 3 p.m. The Skyhawks return home on Saturday, October 15, to host The College of Saint Rose for Senior Day at noon. American International (1-7, 1-7 NE-10) hosts Bentley University on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
