#31 Wellesley Tops Women's Tennis in Opener, 5-1

Stojkovic leads Blue to season-opening win

WELLESLEY, Mass. (September 1, 2016) – Wellesley College, ranked 31st in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III national rankings, picked up a 5-1 victory over Stonehill College, ranked sixth in the ITA East Regional rankings, in the season-opening match for both inside Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse tonight.

Senior Andjela Stojkovic (Victoria, British Columbia) paced Wellesley to the victory as a double-winner. She teamed up with freshman Sarah Yan (Holmdel, New Jersey/Holmdel) to battle their way to an 8-6 decision at No. 2 doubles. All three doubles matches were decided by just a break with the Blue carrying a 2-1 edge after doubles. Stojkovic then clinched the win with her 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles against Stonehill freshman Carolina Alvarez (Orlando, Florida/Freedom).

Stonehill's point came from No. 1 doubles as junior captain Victoria Barbetta (Wesley Chapel, Florida/Saddlebrook Prep) and Alvarez teamed up for an 8-6 decision over senior Carina Chen (Hong Kong) and sophomore Justine Huang (Coto de Caza, California/Tesoro).

Stonehill (0-1, 0-0 NE-10) returns to action next Wednesday, September 7, when it visits rival Southern New Hampshire University, ranked seventh in the ITA East Region rankings, for a key Northeast-10 Conference clash at 2 p.m. The Skyhawks home opener is two days later when it hosts Bentley University for its Purple & White match at Charles Watt Tennis Courts at 6 p.m. Wellesley (1-0, 0-0 NEWMAC) hosts Smith College on Saturday at 11 a.m.
