Skyhawks anticipate NCAA Tournament bid Tuesday night
WORCESTER, Mass. (April 20, 2017) – Stonehill College, ranked No. 5 in this week's NCAA Division II East Regional rankings, capped its spring tune-ups for an anticipated NCAA Tournament bid with a 4-3 victory over Division I College of the Holy Cross in non-conference women's tennis action at Sinnott Family Tennis Complex tonight.
Stonehill (14-6, 11-1 NE10), regular season champions of the Northeast-10 Conference, await word on what it hopes to be an 11th trip to the NCAA Tournament when bids are announced on Tuesday, April 25, via ncaa.com at 8 p.m. Holy Cross (2-14, 0-5 Patriot League) hosts Roger Williams College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Freshman Alexandra Vo (Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania/Nazareth Academy) led three double-winners for Stonehill by earning victories at both No. 1 singles and doubles. She and classmate Annelise Howick (Jacksonville, Florida/Creekside) teamed up to lead a sweep of the three doubles match to earn a point for the Skyhawks with their 7-5 decision. Vo followed that up by notching an 8-4 win at No. 1 singles against Holy Cross sophomore Allison Reiling (Mendham, New Jersey/Morristown-Beard) to clinch the deciding fourth point for the visitors.
Junior Emma Prinos (Foxboro, Massachusetts/Foxboro) and sophomore Nicole Downey (Groveland, Massachusetts/Pentucket Regional) also earned a pair of wins for Stonehill, starting by combining for a 6-3 decision at No. 2 doubles. Downey posted the Skyhawks first singles point with her 8-5 decision at No. 2 against junior Katie Elia (Erie, Pennsylvania/Mercyhurst Prep), while Prinos drew Stonehill within a point of the match win with her 8-2 victory at No. 3 singles against senior Isabela Bagi (Branford, Connecticut/Gunnery).
Sophomores Morgan McGuire (Franklin Lakes, New Jersey/Indian Hills), Jennifer Kary (Scarsdale, New York/School of the Holy Child) and Caroline Kam (Stonington, Connecticut/St. George's) earned Holy Cross's points in singles play with their wins at No. 4, 5 and 6 singles, respectively.
