Women's Tennis Defeats Bentley in NE-10 Opener, 7-2

Vo and Downey posts two wins each to lead Skyhawks

EASTON, Mass. (September 9, 2016) – Stonehill College opened its Northeast-10 Conference schedule on a winning note with a 7-2 victory over Bentley University in NE-10 women's tennis action at Charles Watt Tennis Courts tonight.

Freshman Alexandra Vo (Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania/Nazareth Academy) and sophomore Nicole Downey (Groveland, Massachusetts/Pentucket Regional) were both double-winners for Stonehill in the win. Vo teamed up with classmate Annelise Howick (Jacksonville, Florida/Creekside) for an 8-6 decision at No. 2 doubles and then notched a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 2 singles against Bentley sophomore Hannah Fabianski (Pawcatuck, Connecticut/Stonington).

Downey and junior Emma Prinos (Foxboro, Massachusetts/Foxboro) gave Stonehill a 2-1 edge following doubles play with their 8-5 win at No. 3. Downey followed that up with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles against freshman Katie Tynan (West Barnstable, Massachusetts/Barnstable). Junior Victoria Barbetta (Wesley Chapel, Florida/Saddlebrook Prep) and Colleen O'Donnell (Waterville, Maine/Waterville) as well as freshman Carolina Alvarez (Orlando, Florida/Freedom) all added singles wins for the Skyhawks.

Tynan and senior Rachel Petrini (Madison, Connecticut/Daniel Hand) teamed up for an 8-4 win at No. 1 singles for Bentley. Senior Susan Stowe (Hebron, Connecticut/RHAM) collected a win at No. 5 singles when Howick withdrew after Stowe won the first set.

Stonehill (1-1, 1-0 NE-10) is right back in action tomorrow when it hosts Saint Michael's College for an NE-10 dual match at 11 a.m. Bentley (0-1, 0-1 NE-10) hosts Franklin Pierce University, at Brandeis University, on Sunday at noon.
