Beg and Sengl lead Lightning to key regional win
WILMINGTON, Del. (April 9, 2017) – Goldey-Beacom College, ranked No. 3 in both the NCAA Division II and Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional rankings, swept the top four singles flights to clinch a 6-3 victory over Stonehill College, ranked fifth in both regional rankings, in non-conference women's tennis action at Delcastle Tennis Center today.
Seniors Francesca Beg (Westbury, England) and Nina Sengl (Puchheim, Germany) led the way for Goldey-Beacom as double-winners in the matchup of programs in position to earn NCAA bids later this month. The region's No. 10-ranked doubles team posted an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles as the Lightning carried a 2-1 edge after doubles play. Beg followed that up with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles against Stonehill junior Emma Prinos (Foxboro, Massachusetts/Foxboro) which provided the match clinching point for Goldey-Beacom, while Sengl registered a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles against freshman Caroline Ray (Falmouth, Massachusetts/Falmouth). Freshman Alma Garcia Valle (Valladolid, Spain) also notched singles and doubles wins for the Lightning.
Freshman Annelise Howick (Jacksonville, Florida/Creekside) posted wins in both singles and doubles to lead Stonehill. She teamed up with classmate Alexandra Vo (Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania/Nazareth Academy) for a 9-7 win at No. 2 doubles and then rallied for a three-set win at No. 5 singles against Goldey-Beacom freshman Silvia Hortelano Pey (Castelldefels, Spain). Howick dropped the first set, 6-1 and then reeled off the next two sets, 6-4, 6-2 to pick up the win. Junior Melissa Parker (Madison, Connecticut/Daniel Hand) also earned a point for the Skyhawks with her 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles against sophomore Manuela Cornejo (Waldbronn, Germany).
Stonehill (13-6, 11-1 NE10) closes out its regular season schedule, with an eye towards an NCAA Tournament bid, on Wednesday, April 19, at College of the Holy Cross at 4 p.m. Goldey-Beacom (13-1, 7-0 CACC) hosts nationally-ranked Queens (N.Y.) College, ranked second in the region, tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
