Adelphi Halts Women's Tennis' Streak, 5-4

Fakas, Serina and Perri lead Panthers to NE-10 win

WEST HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (October 9, 2016) – Adelphi University, ranked fifth in the Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, dealt 6th-ranked Stonehill College its first Northeast-10 Conference loss of the season with a 5-4 decision in NE-10 women's tennis action inside the Hempstead Lake Indoor Tennis Center today.

Junior Rebecca Fakas (Little Neck, New York/Benjamin N. Cardozo) and sophomore Karen Serina (East Islip, New York/East Islip) led three double-winners for Adelphi, which claimed a 2-1 edge after doubles play and made it stand through the six singles matches. The duo earned the doubles advantage for the Panthers with their 9-7 victory at No. 1. Serina followed that up with a back and forth 6-1, 5-7, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles against Stonehill freshman Carolina Alvarez (Orlando, Florida/Freedom), while Fakas registered a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles against junior Victoria Barbetta (Wesley Chapel, Florida/Saddlebrook Prep).

Sophomore Samantha Perri (Floral Park, New York/Floral Park Memorial) rounded out the double-winners for Adelphi, earning the deciding fifth point with her 7-5, 6-4 triumph at No. 5 singles against junior Emma Prinos (Foxboro, Massachusetts/Foxboro). Perri and junior Elizabeth Kallenberg (Port Washington, New York/Paul D. Schreiber) also claimed an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles for the Panthers.

Sophomore Nicole Downey (Groveland, Massachusetts/Pentucket Regional) posted singles and doubles wins to lead Stonehill. She teamed up with Prinos for an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles and then followed that up with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles against Adelphi junior Vanja Savic (Woodside, New York/Beacon School). Downey has won all 11 of her NE-10 singles matches this fall and is now 18-1 in league singles matches over her two year career.

Freshman Alexandra Vo (Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania/Nazareth Academy) and junior Colleen O'Donnell (Waterville, Maine/Waterville) each recorded singles wins for Stonehill to remain unbeaten in NE-10 play. Vo won at No. 2 singles when Kallenberg retired while trailing 2-1 in the first set as the Stonehill freshman improved her singles record to 11-0 this fall. O'Donnell is 10-0 in NE-10 singles matches this season and 19-0 for her career after breezing to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6 against junior Maria Bruzon Gutierrez (San Salvador, El Salvador).

Stonehill (10-2, 10-1 NE-10) is off until next Saturday when it hosts The College of Saint Rose for Senior Day at noon. Adelphi (8-3, 8-3 NE-10) rounds out its regular season at Saint Anselm College next Saturday at 10 a.m.
