Women's Tennis Dominant Against Merrimack, 7-2

Alvarez and O'Donnell both post singles and doubles wins in regional battle

EASTON, Mass. (September 13, 2016) – Stonehill College, ranked sixth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, produced a dominant 7-2 victory over 10th-ranked Merrimack College in Northeast-10 Conference women's tennis action at Charles Watt Tennis Courts this afternoon.

Junior Colleen O'Donnell (Waterville, Maine/Waterville) and freshman Carolina Alvarez (Orlando, Florida/Freedom) both posted singles and doubles wins to lead Stonehill to its third straight win and remain perfect in NE-10 play. Alvarez and junior captain Victoria Barbetta (Wesley Chapel, Florida/Saddlebrook Prep) teamed up for an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles, while O'Donnell and junior Emma Prinos (Foxboro, Massachusetts/Foxboro) clinched a 2-1 Skyhawks advantage following doubles play with their 8-3 win at No. 3.

Stonehill sealed the win by taking the first five singles matches as O'Donnell clinched the deciding point with her 6-0, 6-3 victory at No. 6 singles against freshman Mia Briggs (York, Maine/York). Alvarez cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles against sophomore Lauren Persson (Barnstable, Massachusetts/Barnstable).

Freshman Annelise Howick (Jacksonville, Florida/Creekside) posted the Skyhawks first singles point with her 6-2, 6-0 triumph at No. 4 singles against junior Danielle Dunn (Middleton, Massachusetts/Masconomet). Freshman Alexandra Vo (Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania/Nazareth Academy) and sophomore Nicole Downey (Groveland, Massachusetts/Pentucket Regional) also picked up singles wins for Stonehill at No. 2 and No. 5, respectively.

Senior Grace Messina (Caracas, Venezuela) had a hand in both points for Merrimack. She teamed up with sophomore Mana Seifaei (North York, Ontario/East Haig) for an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles and then she added a 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) decision at No. 1 singles against Barbetta.

Stonehill's (3-1, 3-0 NE-10) is off until Sunday when it hosts Le Moyne College for an NE-10 matchup at 10 a.m. Please note a correction on this start time from what has been posted on the athletics website and programs. (Merrimack (3-1, 3-1 NE-10) hosts Le Moyne on Saturday at 11 a.m.
