Hepburn Wins Second New England Title of Weekend

Skyhawks remain second in team standings after day three of NEISDA Championships

KINGSTON, R.I. (February 26, 2022) – Freshman Jami Hepburn highlighted a day in which every Stonehill College women's swimmer that entered the pool qualified for a final with her second New England title of the weekend to highlight four finalists in the 100-yard breaststroke on day three of the 2022 New England Intercollegiate Swimming & Diving Championships, hosted by the University of Rhode Island, at Tootell Aquatic Center today.

Hepburn added today's New England Championship in the 100-yard breaststroke to her Northeast-10 Conference title in that event last weekend, as well as a New England title in the 50-breaststroke on Friday. She was among three podium finishes for the Skyhawks today to give them nine so far this weekend.

Stonehill remains second in the team standings after day three with 706.5 points. Roger Williams University leads the way with 1,458 points, while Norwich University climbed into third with 558.5 points and Regis College is fourth with 540. 

Highlights

  • Hepburn added a New England title in the 100-yard breaststroke to her NE10 championship for the same event last weekend, capturing her second individual title of the weekend with her first-place finish tonight in 1:07.87, leading a quartet of Skyhawks in the A-Final. She qualified first overall earlier in the day in 1:07.54 after winning the 50-yard breaststroke title yesterday in a school-record 30.65-seconds.
  • Freshman Sharlotte Lundell finished fifth in the 100-breaststroke final in 1:10.68 after qualifying fifth out of 22 entries in prelims in a personal-best 1:10.18, while sophomore Maddie Conley followed in sixth in 1:11.10 after qualifying sixth in a personal-best 1:10.58. Sophomore Sydney Stockwell rounded out the Stonehill finalist foursome in eighth in 1:13.40 after qualifying eighth in prelims with a time of 1:12.55.

    Freshman Sofiya Gobora earned a silver medal with her second-place finish in tonight's 100-yard backstroke final in 1:00.40 – a mere 0.06 behind first place finisher Kate Wieler, a freshman from Roger Williams. Gobora was the top qualifier for the finals with an identical first-place time of 1:00.40 in the prelims, leading 32 entries overall.
  • Stonehill started Saturday night's finals with a second-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:50.93. Stockwell opened with a 27.80-second split on the lead backstroke leg, before Hepburn swam the breaststroke in 31.35 and then Lundell completed the butterfly leg in 26.31-seconds, before Gobora swam the freestyle anchor leg in 25.47-seconds. The relay qualified second earlier in the day in 1:54.10 behind the efforts of junior Nika Sokolova with a personal-best 28.82-second backstroke, Conley with a 32.09 breaststroke, sophomore Katie Keating with a 27.86 butterfly and Lundell with a 25.33-second freestyle.
  • Sokolova finished fourth in the 200-yard freestyle final tonight in a school-record 2:00.90 after qualifying fourth in prelims by clocking in at 2:01.95 – cutting nearly ten seconds off her previous personal-best today. Freshman Julie Mastroianni took fifth in the B-final in 2:05.80 after qualifying 12th out of 21 entries overall earlier in the day in 2:06.50.
  • Keating took sixth place in the 50-yard butterfly final in a personal-best 27.83-seconds. She qualified sixth for the final earlier in the day at prelims in 27.91-seconds.
  • Stonehill rounded out the third day of the Championships with a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:45.57. Mastroianni swam the lead leg in 27.04-seconds, followed by a 26.34-second split from Conley, and a 26.03 split from Sokolova, before Keating completed the anchor leg in 26.16-seconds. Mastroianni and Sokolova also swam the prelim for the relay earlier in that day that qualified fourth in 1:45.86, along with Hepburn and Gobora.

The NEISDA Championship wraps up on Sunday with prelims starting at 10 a.m., and then finals at 5:30 p.m. The Skyhawks have entries in the 100-yard freestyle, 50-yard backstroke, 200-yard breaststroke, 100-yard individual medley and 400-yard freestyle relay.
