Women's Swimming Wraps Solid Showing at ECAC Winter Championships in Seventh Place

Six Skyhawks swim in individual finals on Sunday, including four morning qualifiers, while 400-free relay posts top NE10 time

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. (December 6, 2021) – The Stonehill College women's swimming program wrapped up its first championship meet in program history with a seventh place team finish (first among non-Division I teams), led by six individual finalists to highlight the third and final day, at the 2021 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Winter Championships, at Nassau County Aquatic Center on Sunday. 

Highlights

  • After seeing its first three finals qualifiers in program history on Saturday, Stonehill had six more compete for individual finals on Sunday, with sophomores Maddie Conley  and Katie Keating as well as freshmen Jami Hepburn, Julie Mastroianni, Sharlotte Lundell and Sofiya Gobora all competing on Sunday night.
  • Hepburn, after becoming Stonehill's first B-cut qualifier in the 100-yard breaststroke on Saturday, qualified for the C-Final in the 200-yard breaststroke today. She finished third in the C-final in a school-record 2:28.41 (19th overall) to earn six points towards Stonehill's team score. She qualified for her second individual final in 2:29.33 in the morning for the event that had 36 entries, including Conley who was the first alternate to make the finals, finishing 25th overall in 2:34.91 during the prelims, as the Skyhawks were second and third out of the nine non-Division I entries.
  • Conley opened finals night with a 20th place finish in the 1650-yard freestyle to earn five points with her time of 19:26.58 – leading the non-Division I entries. Mastroianni finished 23rd in 19:58.03, good for third in the small college category.

    Keating made her first individual final and was joined by Lundell in 200-yard butterfly C-Final. Keating finished fourth in the final (20th overall) in 2:15.93 to earn five points, while Lundell was sixth in 2:16.71 (22nd) and earned three points. Keating had qualified 20th out of 32 total entries with her school-record prelim time of 2:15.23, while Lundell qualified 24th in 2:18.93.
  • Gobora earned a spot in Sunday afternoon's C-Final for the 200-yard backstroke as one of two alternates and finished seventh in 2:09.87 to earn two points for Stonehill's team score. She was lone non-Division I swimmer to qualify with her school-record prelim time of 2:09.76 leading the six small college entries, including a trio of Skyhawks.
  • Stonehill's A and B teams finished back-to-back in 14th and 15th in the 400-yard freestyle relay on Sunday evening. The A-squad in 3:43.59 to lead the six non-Division I entries, with Gobora swimming the lead leg in a school-record 55.17-seconds, followed by Mastroianni with a 56.27-second leg, and then Keating clocking in at 57.03-seconds, before sophomore Sydney Stockwell swam the anchor leg in 55.12. The B-relay finished in 3:47.03, consisting of Conley (56.94), junior Nika Sokolova (56.73), Hepburn (56.41) and Lundell (56.95).
  • Stonehill capped the event in seventh place in the team standings with 261 points – first among non-Division I programs that scored, which included fellow Northeast-10 Conference member Adelphi University (165 points) in tenth. Columbia University won the women's team title with 2,218 points, with the University of Maryland Baltimore County (1,909) second and Long Island University (1,085) third.

More Stonehill Results

  • Stockwell placed 30th out of 44 entries in the 200-yard backstroke morning prelims in 2:10.91, while Sokolova was 38th in 2:14.31.
  • Keating placed 51st out of 94 competitors in the 100-yard freestyle, and was fifth among non-Division I entries, with her time of 57.25-seconds. Mastroianni and Hepburn placed 60th and 61st, respectfully, in 58.14 and 58.15-seconds. Junior Maggie Timmoney placed 80th in 1:02.26.

Stonehill is now off for the holiday break and returns to competition on Saturday, January 15, with a dual meet at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth at noon. The Skyhawks will compete at their first NE10 Championships February 3-6 in Worcester, Massachusetts, at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
