Skyhawks open final championship of inaugural season with solid relay effort

KINGSTON, R.I. (February 24, 2022) – The Stonehill College women's swimming team opened its final weekend of its inaugural season with a solid relay effort in the lone event on day one of the 2022 New England Intercollegiate Swimming & Diving Championships, hosted by the University of Rhode Island, at Tootell Aquatic Center tonight.

Stonehill finished second in the 800-yard freestyle relay in the lone event held on day one of the Championships. The Skyhawks clocked in with a time of 8:13.56 in their program debut for the event, behind the efforts of sophomore captains Sydney Stockwell and Maddie Conley, along with freshmen Julie Mastroianni and Sofiya Gobora that finished behind winners Roger Williams University (7:49.81), but edged third place Simmons College (8:13.79) by 0.23-seconds.

Stockwell swam the lead leg in a school-record 2:03.29, followed by Conley with a 2:03.48-split on the second leg and then Mastroianni completed the third leg in 2:05.65, before Gobora brought home the anchor leg in 2:01.14. Stockwell's opening leg edged the previous school mark of 2:03.84 by Mastroianni at last weekend's Northeast-10 Conference Championships.

Stonehill earned 56 points with the second-place finish tonight, which also puts the Skyhawks second in the team standings out of eight programs that competed in tonight's relay.

The NEISDA Championships at Tootell Aquatic Center continue Friday, with an adjustment to the schedule due to weather, as all regularly scheduled events moved to timed finals starting at 2:30 p.m. Stonehill will be competing in the 100-yard butterfly, 50-yard breaststroke, 200-yard backstroke, 50-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley and 400-yard medley relay.
