Skyhawks remain second in team standings after day two of NEISDA Championships

KINGSTON, R.I. (February 25, 2022) – The Stonehill College women's swimming program posted the first two New England titles in program history to highlight a solid day two of the 2022 New England Intercollegiate Swimming & Diving Championships, hosted by the University of Rhode Island, at Tootell Aquatic Center today.

Sophomore Sydney Stockwell and freshman Jami Hepburn collected the first two New England titles in Stonehill swimming history today, with Stockwell also posting a third-place finish and the duo also led the Skyhawks medley relay to a second-place finish at 400-yards. Stonehill finished the day with five top three finishes, giving it six over the first two days of the Championships.

Stonehill remains second in the team with 404 points. Roger Williams University leads the way with 726 points, while the University of New England follows the Skyhawks in third (275 points) and Regis College (273) is fourth. Saturday's events were changed to timed finals due to the inclement weather in the region. 

Highlights

  • Hepburn followed up her Northeast-10 Conference championship in the 100-yard breaststroke with a New England title for the 50-yard breaststroke today, clocking in at a school-record 30.65-seconds. Sophomore Maddie Conley rounded out a top ten finish in 33.13-seconds.
  • Stockwell notched a New England title in the 200-yard individual medley relay in a personal-best 2:15.07. She opened with a 28.51-second split in the opening butterfly leg, completing the backstroke leg in 33.69-seconds, before swimming the breaststroke leg in 40.60-seconds and then the freestyle anchor leg in 32.27-seconds. She edged out Roger Williams University sophomore Brenna Guilmette (2:15.07) by 0.37-seconds. Junior Nika Sokolova took fourth out of 19 entries in 2:17.41 – dropping over 11-seconds off her personal-best, while Conley finished sixth in 2:21.09.

    Stonehill placed three swimmers in the top four of the 100-yard butterfly, led by freshman Sharlotte Lundell in second out of 23 entries with her personal-best time of 59.55-seconds. Stockwell followed in third with her time of 59.98-seconds, while sophomore Katie Keating took fourth in 1:01.93. Freshman Sofiya Gobora added a top ten finish for the Skyhawks in 1:03.06.
  • Stockwell, Hepburn, Lundell and Gobora also led Stonehill to a second-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay in 4:02.43. Stockwell opened with a 59.07-second backstroke leg, before Hepburn swam the breaststroke leg in 1:08.49, and then Lundell completed the butterfly leg in 58.96-seconds before Gobora swam the freestyle anchor in 55.91.

  • Freshman Julie Mastroianni recorded a ninth-place finish out of 23 entries in the 200-yard backstroke with her personal-best time of 2:23.09, dropping over eight seconds off her previous best.
  • Lundell followed up her runner-up finish in the 100-butterfly with a ninth place finish out of 34 entries in the 50-yard freestyle in 26.04-seconds. Keating placed 16th in 26.83-seconds, while Hepburn also scored points for Stonehill with her 17th place finish in 26.84.

Up Next

The NEISDA Championship continues Saturday with prelims starting at 10 a.m., and then finals at 6 p.m. The Skyhawks have entries in the 200-yard medley relay, 50-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard backstroke, 200-yard freestyle relay and 1000-yard freestyle.
