Women's Swimming Relays Lead in NE10 Championships Debut

Skyhawks 400 medley relay takes fourth, 200 free relay sixth, while Lundell & Gobora finish first and third in 200 IM B-Final to lead day two of Championships

NE10 Championship Day Two Recap

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (February 18, 2022) – Stonehill College made its much-anticipated debut at the 2022 Northeast-10 Conference Women's Swimming & Diving Championships, hosted by Southern Connecticut State University, and had a solid showing on day two of the event at Hutchison Natatorium today.

Stonehill's relay events led the way, nearly earning a podium spot in the 400-yard medley relay, while the 200-yard freestyle relay finished sixth and freshmen Sharlotte Lundell and Sofiya Gobora turned in top three finishes in the B-Final of the 200-yard individual medley.

Stonehill finished day two of the NE10 Championships in seventh place out of the nine teams competing at the event with 102 points after 17 events scored. Defending and 13-time champions Southern Connecticut State leads the way with 433 points, with Bentley University (295 points) second and Assumption University (277) third. The Skyhawks are 37 points behind sixth place Pace University (139) and lead Adelphi University (99) and Saint Michael's College (87).

    Stonehill's 400-yard medley relay A team nearly produced the program's first podium finish, taking fourth in a school-record 4:00.00. The Skyhawks held the lead after two legs before being edged down the stretch in the outstanding effort to cap day two of the championships. Sophomore captain Sydney Stockwell swam the opening backstroke leg in a personal-best 59.23-seconds, before freshman Jami Hepburn put the Skyhawks out in front with a 1:05.12 breaststroke leg, while sophomore Katie Keating completed the butterfly leg in 1:00.91 and then Gobora swam the freestyle anchor leg in 55.64-seconds.
  • Stonehill's 200-yard freestyle relay A team earned the honor of being the first Skyhawks to compete in an NE10 final and turned in a sixth-place finish in 1:42.36. Gobora swam the opening leg in 26.18-seconds, followed by Keating with a 25.64-second split in leg two, before Hepburn completed the third leg in 25.68-seconds and then Stockwell swam the anchor leg in 24.86.
  • Lundell won the B-final of the 200-yard individual medley relay in a personal-best 2:14.72, shaving over two seconds off her morning prelim time of 2:17.48 that saw her qualify 10th out of 26 total entries. Gobora also turned in a top three finish for the Skyhawks in the B final with her time of 2:17.54 – nearly three seconds better than her morning prelim time of 2:20.43 to qualify 15th overall. Lundell swam the opening butterfly leg in 28.49-seconds, followed by a 35.44-second split for the backstroke leg, before swimming the breaststroke leg in 38.40-seconds and then completing the freestyle leg in 32.39-seconds. Gobora opened with a 30.00-second butterfly leg, followed by a 34.72 split on the backstroke, and then a 42.08-second breaststroke leg and a 30.74-second freestyle.
  • Sophomore captain Maddie Conley made program history as Stonehill's first to qualify for an individual final, with a spot in tonight's 500-yard freestyle B-final. She finished in 16th overall in 5:30.56, just off her morning prelim time of 5:30.19 – good for 16th out of 26 entries overall.

More Stonehill Results 

  • Stonehill's B relay finished fourth in the C-final of the 400-yard medley relay (20th overall) in 4:10.17. Swimming for the Skyhawks B relay were junior Nika Sokolova, Conley, Lundell and freshman Julie Mastroianni.
  • Stonehill's B relay took fifth in the C-final of the 200-yard freestyle relay (21st overall) in 1:43.06. Conley, Mastroianni, Sokolova and Lundell competed for the Skyhawks B relay in this event.
  • Mastroianni earned the honor of officially entering Stonehill into the NE10 Championships for the first time when she dove in for the second heat of the 500-yard freestyle in this morning's prelims, finishing 20th in a personal-best 5:39.70, while Sokolova placed 18th in a personal-best 5:36.84.
  • Hepburn finished 23rd out of 53 total entries in the 50-yard freestyle in this morning's prelims in a personal-best 25.82-seconds. Keating placed 30th in a personal-best 26.31-seconds and junior Maggie Timmoney placed 44th in a personal-best 28.12.
