Stonehill Struggles On Offense, Falls 1-0 to Saint Anselm

Senior captain Amy Wheaton made three saves in this afternoon's loss to Saint Anselm.

Skyhawks fail to capitalize on several scoring opportunities

EASTON, Mass. (October 30, 2013) – The Stonehill College women's soccer team allowed a first half score, and struggled to finish around the net as Stonehill fell 1-0 to visiting Saint Anselm College this afternoon in Northeast-10 action at Skyhawk Field.

Saint Anselm scored the lone goal of the contest in the 25th minute, as freshman midfielder Kendra Bonczar (Milford, N.H./Milford) found the back of the net with the help of an assist from senior midfielder Siobhan Flaherty (Braintree, Mass./Braintree). The goal gave Bonczar her team-leading sixth of the season. Flaherty was able to set up Bonczar following a save by Stonehill senior keeper Amy Wheaton (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth). Wheaton dove to her left, stopping a shot by Saint Anselm sophomore midfielder Callie Millet (Lancaster, Mass./Nashoba), and Flaherty was in perfect position to collect the ball and dish it to Bonczar.

Stonehill had a great opportunity to tie the contest in the 34th minute, when junior forward Megan Sullivan (Sutton, Mass./Sutton) found herself alone in front of the Saint Anselm goal, but Sullivan's shot ended up in the arms of Hawks keeper Cassie Quattropani (East Hartford, Conn./East Hartford). Quattropani, the reigning NE-10 Goalkeeper of the Week, made three saves in her third consecutive shutout. Wheaton also stopped three shots in the loss.

This afternoon's match served as a rematch of the 2013 season opener for both schools, which was held on September 6th as part of the inaugural Catholic Cup, hosted by Assumption College. Stonehill and Saint Anselm played to a 1-1 draw in that contest, with Stonehill senior midfielder Casey Mathews (Mattapoisett, Mass./Old Rochester Regional) scoring the lone goal for the Skyhawks. Stonehill would advance past the Hawks on penalty kicks, before falling in the Catholic Cup final to Assumption.

Stonehill (5-10-2, 5-7-1) returns to action on Saturday, as the Skyhawks are set to host Adelphi University on Senior Day at Skyhawk Field. Saint Anselm (7-6-3, 6-5-2 NE-10) moves up to sixth place with its win this afternoon, and the Hawks wrap up their regular season on Saturday against Le Moyne.
