Skyhawks unable to overcome early deficit

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. (October 16, 2013) – The Stonehill College women's soccer team fell behind by a pair of goals less than fifteen minutes into tonight's match, eventually losing 2-0 to Merrimack College in Northeast-10 action at Martone-Mejail Field.

Merrimack forced Stonehill to play from behind very early in the contest, as the Warriors scored at the 8:18 mark on a header by senior forward Jenna Zechner (Billerica, Mass./Shawsheen Valley). Merrimack then doubled its advantage five minutes later, when senior back Michelle Laramee (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) found sophomore forward Jenna Savi (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) for her team-leading fifth goal this season. The Warriors were done scoring for the night after their second tally, but it was more than enough, as Stonehill was unable to generate any offense.

Merrimack senior goalkeeper Nicole Curtis (Billerica, Mass./Billerica), who entered tonight's match with a 1.14 goals-against average, made four saves, earning her third shutout of the season. Stonehill senior keeper Amy Wheaton (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) stopped four shots as well.

Merrimack held advantages in both shots (14-10), and corner kicks (11-3) in the contest.

Stonehill (3-8-2, 3-5-1 NE-10) will look to end its six-match winless streak this Saturday at 1 p.m., when the Skyhawks square off with Southern Connecticut State University at Skyhawk Field. Merrimack (7-3-2, 5-2-2 NE-10) will remain in North Andover for its next two matches, as the Warriors host nationally ranked the College of Saint Rose on Saturday and Saint Michael's College on Tuesday, October 22nd.
