Skyhawks give up another late lead, fall in 2OT

WORCESTER, Mass. (September 7, 2013) – The Stonehill College women's soccer team appeared poised to capture the inaugural Catholic Cup championship, before giving up a late goal and losing in double overtime to host Assumption, 2-1, today at Assumption's Multi-Sport Stadium.

Junior forward Renee Trudeau (Pembroke, Mass./Pembroke) scored the first goal of the contest two and a half minutes into the second half to give the visiting Skyhawks a 1-0 advantage.

Assumption responded in the 76th minute, when Emily Hill (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) found Paige Radomski (Kingston, Mass./Silver Lake) to tie the game at 1. The Skyhawks and Greyhounds then played through nearly two full overtime sessions, before Andrea Bates (Holden, Mass./Wachusett) ended the game with just fifty-eight seconds remaining until penalty kicks.

Despite the loss, Trudeau, Casey Matthews (Mattapoisett, Mass./Old Rochester Regional), and Claire O'Brien (West Hartford, Conn./Hall) all earned spots on the Catholic Cup All-Tournament Team.

Stonehill faces a quick turnaround after playing nearly four full overtime sessions in two days, as the Skyhawks return home to play Felician College tomorrow at 1 p.m. in non-conference action at Skyhawk Field. Assumption is off until next Saturday, when they open their Northeast-10 slate at home against Franklin Pierce.
