EASTON, Mass. (April 4, 2014) - Stonehill College held its annual Academic Excellence Recognition Breakfast at Alumni Hall this morning. The event is the signature event for the College in recognition of National Student-Athlete Week as administrators, faculty and athletic staff presented St. Thomas Aquinas medals as well as its Outstanding Faculty Member Award.

The event honors student-athletes from Stonehill’s 20 varsity programs who have the highest cumulative grade point average on their respective teams through the Fall 2013 semester. Those students are presented with St. Thomas Aquinas, Patron Saint of Students, Medals. Of the 17 medal recipients today, four are repeat honorees, with senior Kelly Gouveia (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth), from the field hockey program finishing their career by being honored at her third breakfast. Senior Elizabeth LaRegina (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield), of the Northeast-10 Conference champion women’s cross country team, and juniors Amy Pelletier (Beverly, Mass./Bishop Fenwick), from women’s basketball, and Christian Baglini (Milford, Conn./Notre Dame), from the baseball team, round out the repeat winners as two-time medal recipients.

In addition, senior Catie Kelly (Medfield, Mass./Medfield), vice chairperson of Stonehill's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, presented the athletic department's Outstanding Faculty Member Award to David Hurley, Teaching Fellow of Psychology at Stonehill. A former track athlete at Bates College, Hurley is currently a fourth year doctoral student in counseling and sport psychology at Boston University. In addition to his teaching duties over the last two years at Stonehill, he serves as a mentor to several teams at the College in maintaining a positive mindset in competition.
