#20 Purple Knights stymie Skyhawks

Bridgeport, Conn. (September 26, 2013) – The Stonehill College women's soccer team had its three match winning streak snapped at the hands of the University of Bridgeport tonight, as Stonehill dropped a 1-0 non-conference contest at Knights Field.

Bridgeport, which came into the match ranked 20th in the latest NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA DII National Poll, and ranked third in the East Region poll behind only NE-10 juggernauts American International and Saint Rose, has now won its sixth game in a row, having outscored its opponents 12-2 during the streak.

The Purple Knights jumped out to a 1-0 advantage with just over two minutes remaining in the first half when Bridgeport junior Danielle Puddefoot (Slough, England/Langleywood) collected a through ball from freshman Lauren Mengel (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) and beat Stonehill senior goalkeeper Amy Wheaton (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) for her third goal of the season.

Bridgeport missed a golden opportunity to increase its lead in the 71st minute when freshman Tabea Rauschenberger (Muhlacker, Germany/Oho-Huan-Gymnasium) struck the crossbar with a shot attempt, but the Purple Knights would need no additional insurance, as Stonehill was unable to score in the match.

Stonehill struggled to generate scoring opportunities, and could not convert on any of their three corner kicks or six shots. Sophomore forward Meagan Elliott (Norton, Mass./Norton) was the sole Skyhawk to force Bridgeport goalkeeper Julia Hansson (Tocksfors, Sweden/Tocksfors) to make a save in the match. Hansson earned her fifth shutout of the season in the Purple Knights win.

Stonehill (3-4-1, 3-1-0 NE-10) will have little time to rest and regroup before hitting the road again for a match at the University of New Haven on Saturday night. New Haven is currently second in the NE-10 standings behind only American International, and ranked fifth in the East Region poll. The Skyhawks are on the road again next Wednesday at Southern New Hampshire University, before finally returning to Easton for the 2013 Purple & White Game against American International on Saturday, October 5th at noon. Bridgeport (6-1-0, 2-0-0 ECC) returns to its East Coast Conference schedule with a match at home against Mercy College on Saturday afternoon.
