Stonehill Rallies Late To Stun Bentley In Overtime, 2-1

Freshman Lauren Kapatoes scored with under four minutes remaining in today's match, sending it to overtime.

EASTON, Mass. (October 22, 2013) – The Stonehill College women's soccer team overcame a 1-0 deficit late in the second half to defeat Bentley University, 2-1, in overtime this afternoon in Northeast-10 action at Skyhawk Field. Stonehill has now won consecutive games in overtime, and three overall this season.

Just one minute and twenty-five seconds into the extra session, Stonehill junior forward Renee Trudeau (Pembroke, Mass./Pembroke) dribbled the ball around a Bentley defender, and snuck a shot inside the left goal post, past Falcons keeper Nicole Derba (Franklin, Mass./Fontbonne Academy). Trudeau's second goal of the season gave the Skyhawks their most improbable victory of the 2013 campaign.

Trudeau's game-winner was made possible, however, by Stonehill's persistence on offense at the end of the second half. Trailing 1-0 with under four minutes remaining in regulation, freshman forward Lauren Kapatoes (Hopedale, Mass./Hopedale) found the equalizer that Stonehill had been searching for all game, when she rifled a shot off the crossbar and into the net to force overtime.

Although Stonehill dominated the possession battle in the opening fifteen minutes, Bentley scored the first goal of the contest on a failed clear attempt by the Stonehill back line. A Stonehill defender attempted to fire the ball up to midfield, but it bounced off the legs of Bentley senior midfielder Patty McAllister (South Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) and back in the direction of Stonehill goalkeeper Amy Wheaton (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth). McAllister collected the ball, and buried it in the bottom right corner of the net to give the Falcons a 1-0 advantage in the 19th minute.

Stonehill (5-8-2, 5-5-1 NE-10) is on the road this Saturday for its toughest test of the season, a match with #3 Saint Rose at 1 p.m. in Albany. The Skyhawks then wrap up their regular season with home contests against Saint Anselm on October 30th, and Adelphi on November 2nd. Bentley (2-9-2, 1-8-2 NE-10) returns to action on Saturday at Southern Connecticut.
