Stonehill Defeats Franklin Pierce In Overtime Thriller, 1-0

Junior Megan Sullivan has two goals this season- and both of them have been game-winners.

Skyhawks top Ravens at home for second time in three seasons

EASTON, Mass. (September 24, 2013) – The Stonehill College women's soccer team earned its biggest win of the 2013 campaign today, as a goal late in the first overtime session propelled the Skyhawks to a 1-0 Northeast-10 victory over visiting Franklin Pierce University at Skyhawk Field.

Junior forward Megan Sullivan (Sutton, Mass./Sutton) notched her second consecutive game-winning marker, but this time the goal came in overtime and sent Stonehill off with its third straight win. With just under a minute remaining in the first ten minute extra session, Sullivan dribbled past a Ravens defender in the penalty area and sent the ball just over the out-stretched arms of Franklin Pierce goalkeeper Katie Weldon (Manchester, N.H./Manchester West). The winning tally came on only the second shot on goal for the Skyhawks.

Senior captain Amy Wheaton (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) was solid again in net, stopping six shots for her second consecutive shutout. With two this season, the goalkeeper has now recorded 17 clean sheets in her career at Stonehill.

Franklin Pierce had its best scoring opportunity in the 36th minute, when sophomore forward Hannah Weagle (Ipswich, Mass./Ipswich) hit the cross bar on a free kick. The Ravens had 15 shots in the game, including six on goal.

Today's win gives Stonehill its sixth victory all-time against Franklin Pierce and its second-straight at Skyhawk Field, having also claimed a 1-0 decision here in 2011. The victory also vaults Stonehill ahead of Franklin Pierce in the NE-10 standings, and into a deadlock with Saint Rose, which is currently ranked third nationally. The Skyhawks and Golden Knights are tied in third place with nine points apiece, behind only New Haven (ten points) and first-place American International (12 points).

Stonehill (3-3-1, 3-1-0 NE-10) will look to carry its hot streak on the road, as the Skyhawks will play two matches this week away from Easton. Stonehill faces the University of Bridgeport on Thursday in non-conference action, before returning to NE-10 play Saturday night at the University of New Haven. Franklin Pierce (3-2-1, 2-1-1 NE-10), which came into today's action on a two-match winning streak, will try to get back into the win column on Saturday at #3 Saint Rose.
