Men's Track & Field Takes Three Wins at Merrimack Alumni Classic

McNamee and Morin earn individual wins, while King strong again and leads 4x100 win

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. (April 14, 2022) – The Stonehill College men's track & field program chalked up three event wins on a short week, as it returned to Merrimack College for the second meet in less than a week, competing at the Merrimack Alumni Classic at Duane Stadium this evening.

Senior Nickolas McNamee and sophomore Andrew Morin both earned individual wins, while sophomore Solomon King continued his strong spring in the sprints and jumps to take part in 27 points towards the team score on his own.

Stonehill totaled eight top three finishes with the three event wins to score 83 points and finish fourth in the team standings. The University of Massachusetts Lowell took the team title with 200 points, with Merrimack College second with 188.5. Bryant University third (86) and Assumption University fifth (67.5). 

Highlights

  • McNamee took first place out of 26 runners in the 1500-meter run in a personal-best 3:57.91, marking the fifth-fastest time in the Northeast-10 Conference so far this spring. Freshman Jace Hollenbach finished ninth in 4:09.73 to score for Stonehill as well.

    Morin won the 400-meter hurdles for the second time in less than a week at Merrimack, clocking in today with a personal-best time of 55.97-seconds to lead the list of eight entries and post the fourth-fastest time in the NE10 this spring.
  • King registered a pair of top three finishes on the day, scoring 12 points himself towards the team score, while also part of two relays that scored another 15 points. He finished third in the 100-meter dash in 11.06-seconds to lead six Stonehill entries out of 32 overall, with two Skyhawks in the top ten. Freshman Shea Drugan rounded out the top ten in 11.34-seconds, while classmate Zachary Ofurum placed 12th in 11.47.
  • King also added a third-place finish in the high jump by clearing a season-high 6-feet, 2-inches on his third attempt of his third progression of the event. Sophomore Jacob Pacheco scored in the event as well for Stonehill with a sixth-place finish at 6-feet, even.
  • King anchored Stonehill's 4x100-meter relay that finished first in 42.49-seconds, edging out fellow NE10 rival Assumption University (42.72) with the third-quickest 4x100 time in the Conference this spring. Junior Nate Skopas ran the lead led, followed by Drugan, Ofurum and King.
  • King, Skopas, Drugan and sophomore Connor Hughes also ran Stonehill's 4x400-meter relay for the first time this spring, taking fourth place in 3:32.07. Skopas again took the lead leg, followed by Drugan and Hughes, before King completed the anchor leg.
  • McNamee and Morin also ran a second 4x400-meter relay for Stonehill that clocked in at 3:38.46. McNamee ran the anchor leg after junior Noah Drapeau ran the lead leg, followed by freshman Sean Theurer and then Morin on the third leg.

    Hughes also turned in a third place finish out of 16 entries in the 800-meter run in a personal-best 1:57.45. Freshman Jackson Domingo placed ninth in a personal-best 2:01.04.
  • Senior Robert Lisi led Stonehill's throws at the event with his runner-up finish out of 11 competitors in the hammer throw, clearing a personal-best distance of 158-feet, even that marks the second-longest throw in the NE10 so far this spring. Sophomore Chris Cox placed sixth with a personal-best throw of 135-04 to score three points, while freshman Ethan Peck cleared 130-06 for seventh place.

  • Freshman Parker Hagen finished third in the triple jump with a personal-best distance of 42-feet, 9-inches. He also placed ninth in the long jump with a distance of 19-feet, 10.25-inches, while Theurer cleared 19-3.25.
  • Freshman Michael Gozzo placed 11th out of 15 entries in the discus throw with a distance of 116-feet, 2-inches, scoring two points for Stonehill. Cox scored a point with his distance of 109-04 placing 14th.
  • Gozzo also placed 14th out of 21 entries in the shot put with his longest throw of 40-feet, 11.75-inches to score a point for the Skyhawks. Lisi placed 15th with a personal-best distance of 40-9.75.

Stonehill is back in action next Saturday, April 23, when it competes at the Holy Cross Invitational in Worcester. Stonehill will host its 13th Skyhawk Invitational the following weekend, on Saturday, April 30, at W.B. Mason Stadium, before hosting the Northeast-10 Conference Championships May 6-7.
