Deliano and Bernal double-winners for Terriers in dual that saw three matches decided in three sets and four set tiebreakers

FLUSHING, N.Y. (March 18, 2023) – Saint Francis College of Brooklyn battled its way to a 6-1 victory over Stonehill College in Northeast Conference men's tennis action at the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Billie Jean King National Tennis Center today.

Highlights

  • Freshman Lucas Deliano and junior Ivan Bernal were both double-winners for St. Francis Brooklyn in a dual match that saw three matches decided in three sets and four set tiebreakers with another four sets decided by just a break.
  • Deliano teamed up with freshman Leon Harder for a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles, while Bernal and junior Diego Garcia Gil clinched the doubles point with their 6-4 decision at No. 3.
  • Deliano fought past Stonehill senior Christian Duffy for a 7-6 (10-8), 6-4 triumph at No. 3 singles for St. Francis, while Bernal notched a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles against freshman Donovan Rodrigues.
  • Sophomore Jakob Naylor, postgrad Luis Foix Sotos and junior Javier Servera Latorre also win singles points for the Terriers.
  • Freshman Mateo Mallen won Stonehill's point with a back and fourth 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles over Garcia Gil.
  • Duffy and senior Ben Simmons notched a 7-6 (8-6) victory at No. 2 doubles for the Skyhawks.
  • Naylor and Foix Santos battled to three set wins for St. Francis Brooklyn. Naylor edged freshman Mark Kröll 7-6 (10-8), 6-7 (0-7), 7-5 at No. 2 singles. Foix Santos also went three sets with senior Luke Nickerson for a 6-2, 0-6, 6-1 win.

Stonehill (7-11, 0-3 NEC) returns to action next Saturday when it visits Rider University for a non-conference match at 2 p.m. Tomorrow's scheduled match at Fairfield University has been cancelled due to the weather forecast. The Skyhawks next home match is scheduled for Wednesday March 29, when it hosts Bentley University for a non-conference match. St. Francis Brooklyn (2-10, 1-1 NEC) visits FDU next Saturday at 6 p.m.
