Five double-winners lead Pioneers to NEC win

TRUMBULL, Conn. (February 25, 2023) – Sacred Heart University didn't drop a match and only one set on its way to a 7-0 win over Stonehill College in a Northeast Conference dual match at the Tennis Club at Trumbull tonight. 

Highlights

  • Junior Lefteri Apostolou led five double-winners for Sacred Heart in the win teaming up with postgrad Alberto Mello for a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles.
  • Apostolou followed that up with a 6-4, 6-4 decision at No. 1 singles against Stonehill freshman Mateo Mallen.
  • Mello contributed a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles against Stonehill freshman Mark Kröll.
  • Kröll and senior Luke Nickerson fell by just a break in their match for Stonehill at No. 3 doubles.
  • Sophomore Guillaume Duhil de Bénazé took the first set in his match against Sacred Heart sophomore Antione Hernandez 6-3, before being edged in a second-set tiebreaker (7-1) and then Hernandez won the third set super tiebreaker 10-2 to claim the point.
  • Hernandez and sophomores Matyas Venci and Darius Eftekhar rounded out the double-winners for the Pioneers.

Stonehill (6-5, 0-2 NEC) is back in action next Saturday, when it opens its spring break trip at Rollins College at 4 p.m. Sacred Heart (3-4, 2-1 NEC) visits Bryant University next Monday, March 6 at noon.
