Men's Tennis Caps Fall with Win Over Wheaton, 6-1

EASTON, Mass. (October 15, 2022) – Stonehill College closed out its fall schedule with a 6-1 victory over Wheaton College in a non-conference men's tennis match at Charles Watt Tennis Courts this afternoon. 

Highlights

  • Senior Christian Duffy, sophomore Guillaume Duhil de Bénazé and freshmen Mathias Langaard and Nathaniel Graves were all double-winners to lead Stonehill to the win and cap its fall schedule unbeaten in dual match play.
  • Senior Luke Nickerson also earned a point for the Skyhawks at No. 6 singles.
  • Senior Ethan Na won a hard-earned point for Wheaton, battling back after dropping the first set without winning a game by taking the second in a tiebreaker, before edging out the super tiebreak in the third.

How it Happened

  • Duffy and freshman Mark Kröll helped Stonehill complete a sweep of the three doubles matches for the first point in the match, notching a 6-3 decision at No. 1.
  • de Bénazé teamed up with senior Ben Simmons for a win at No. 2 doubles, while Langaard and Graves rolled to a 6-1 win at No. 3.
  • de Bénazé capped out his two-win afternoon by posting a 6-2, 6-2 decision at No. 3 singles over Wheaton senior Albert Ortega Campos.
  • Langaard claimed a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 4 singles over junior Eli Hannon.
  • Graves added his second win of the match with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph at No. 5 singles against senior Chris Register.
  • Duffy rounded out the Skyhawks double-winners on the afternoon, battling past senior Josh Anschuetz in a second set tiebreaker at No. 1 singles for a 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) final.

Stonehill (6-0, 0-0 NEC) is off until the second semester, when it is next scheduled to host Boston University on Saturday, February 4. Wheaton (1-2, 0-0 NEWMAC) is next scheduled to face Endicott College on Saturday, February 18.
