Volleyball Receives Seventh USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award

2022 USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award Release

EASTON, Mass. (July 19, 2022)– The United States Marine Corps (USMC) and the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) recently announced that 1,213 teams have earned the USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2021-22 season including Stonehill College's women's volleyball team.

The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.

The AVCA Team Academic Award is the single largest award offered by a quantity of schools, players, and coaches honored. Girls high school again had the most winners by category, with 425 teams receiving honors, while 577 women's teams among all three divisions were recognized with 147 being Division II institutions. Over 2,000 different schools have earned the award in the program's 29-year history, with 14,366 awards given out in total.

The Skyhawks join Central Connecticut State University, Merrimack College, Sacred Heart University, and St. Francis College-Brooklyn as the Northeast Conference teams to make the list. Central Connecticut leads the teams with 16 honors, while Stonehill has collected seven awards including six straight. 

Of the Purple & White, 16 players boasted a GPA between 3.00-4.00 in the latest NE10 Academic Honor Roll. Stonehill, under the direction of third-year head coach Craig Martin, garnered a 3.32 cumulative GPA over the two semesters. This past spring, 16 members of the program were placed on the Northeast-10 Conference Academic Honor Roll including two 4.0 GPA's from recent graduates Shannon Burgess and Abby Remick

Stonehill capped its last season in Division II with a 22-10 record (eighth 20-win season in program history), including 10-3 in the NE10 which also featured a No. 1 East Region ranking for the first time in program history early last season. After earning a bid to the NCAA Tournament, the Skyhawks earned its first NCAA Tournament win in program history with a three-set sweep of Jefferson University. The Skyhawks begin regular season play when they head to UNC Asheville to take part in the UNC Asheville Invitational on August 26-27.
