Volleyball Falls in Five Set Showdown with New Haven, 3-2

EASTON, Mass. (November 6, 2021) - The University of New Haven, ranked No. 4 in the first NCAA Division II East Regional rankings of the season, kept its Northeast-10 Conference regular season title hopes alive with a 3-2 (25-22, 22-25, 25-19, 17-25, 15-8) triumph over East Region No. 1 Stonehill College in NE10 volleyball action inside Merkert Gymnasium this afternoon.

The Details

  • New Haven snapped Stonehill's six-match winning streak after the Skyhawks entered the Senior Day match having won 15 of their last 16 and a 20-2 mark since opening weekend. The win also creates a virtual three-team logjam atop the NE10 standings heading into the final week of the regular season with Stonehill, New Haven and American International College all with two losses, although the Skyhawks have one more win than the other two having played one more match. Southern Connecticut State University and Saint Anselm College sit just a game behind the trio in the loss column with three losses.
  • The five-set match was Stonehill's seventh of the season. The Skyhawks are now 5-2 in five-setters in 2021, with both losses coming in NE10 play.
  • Prior to the game, Stonehill honored its five seniors Shannon Burgess, Clare Feeman, Abby Remick, Carly Russell and Lauren Wilke.
  • The Skyhawks were led by Feeman who finished with a career-high matching 16 kills and a hitting percentage of .483, as well as eight digs and a pair of service aces. Feeman's 16 kills tie a career high that was previously set against Franklin Pierce on Sept. 22, 2018.
  • Wilke dished out 28 assists on the day while junior Molly Turner added another 18 as well as a pair of service aces.

Four different Skyhawks finished with double-digit digs during the match led by Russell's 17. Wilke added 15, and Remick and sophomore Kristen DeLorenzo chipped in 13 apiece.
  • Stonehill got out to a fast lead that they were able to maintain until New Haven went on a 6-1 run to take its first lead of the match (18-17). The Chargers would go on to build upon that lead en route to the victory though Remick made things interesting down the stretch with an ace to force New Haven into a timeout before they were able to capture the first set 25-22.
  • The second set was a game of runs. After the Skyhawks got out to a quick 4-1 lead, UNH got back in the game before Turner stepped in and boosted the lead to 10-5 via a 4-0 run that included a service ace. But New Haven responded right away, getting back into the game 11-10 before the Skyhawks put the game away behind the serving of Remick. A Freeman slam made it 17-12 and a massive block by sophomore Lauren McCloskey and junior Basia Peragine put the cap on a 6-1 run that made it 20-13 as the Skyhawks hung on for the 25-22 set two victory.
  • New Haven controlled the third set from start to finish, though the Skyhawks never relented. The Chargers got out to a 6-2 lead that they would never relinquish and finished the set with a 3-0 run capped by a service ace and a kill from freshman Macy Brown to take a 2-1 lead.
  • Feeman was the star of the fourth set finishing with five kills and a pair of service aces while her intensity helped the Skyhawks rout the Chargers 25-17 to force the decisive fifth set. After New Haven got out to a 4-1 lead, Stonehill battled back quickly rallying off four-straight points, jump-started by back-to-back kills from Feeman. After some back-and-forth play, back-to-back aces from Feeman built a cushion for the Skyhawks that New Haven would not be able to overcome en route to the victory.
  • But in the fifth set, New Haven took charge early, gaining a quick 8-3 lead that Stonehill was unable to overcome as they ultimately fell to the Chargers 15-8.
