Stonehill Falls To Westfield State, 4-1

WESTFIELD, Mass. (December 7, 2021)- The Stonehill College men's ice hockey team started their five-game road trip off against the Westfield State University Owls and received an early power-play goal from senior forward, Mike Seoane. However, it was not enough as the Skyhawks (4-7-1) fell to the Owls (5-4-2) in non-conference action Tuesday evening at Amelia Park.

How It Happened

  • Halfway through the first period, the Skyhawks received an early power-play opportunity after they drew a holding penalty. With just under ten minutes left in the period (10:05), John Peloso helped set up the offense as he found an open Teddy McElaney near the net. From there, McElaney sent a shot on Westfield State netminder, Valtteri Valtonen. Seoane corraled the deflection as he tipped the rebound past Valtonen for the early Skyhakws 1-0 lead.
  • Stonehill goalie, Chase McKay helped maintain the early advantage after he stopped eight Owl shots on net which gave the squad a 1-0 lead after one.
  • However, in the second period, Westfield State's offense opened the game up as the Owls added three goals that included two provided by Justin Collins.
  • Collins tied the game up early on in the second (00:56) after he received a pass from Mattheiu Jones to then send a shot right past McKay and tied the contest.
  • Just four minutes later (04:01), Collins ended up scoring the eventual game-winner for the Owls after he collected a pass from Matt Pelletier to have his shot go past McKay's right side for the 2-1 lead.
  • Westfield would go on to add two more goals in the contest, Chuck Costello (12:58-second period) and Cory Morris (18:26-third period).
  • Stonehill kept scrapping though despite falling behind in the second period as the Skyhawks peppered Valtonen with 28 shots in the second and third period which included a 13-9 shot advantage in the third period.
  • McKay (0-2) finished the night with 32 saves on 35 shots. His 32 saves are the second time this season he has recorded 30 or more saves, the eighth of his career.
  • Seoane's first-period power-play goal was his fourth on the season and 15th of his career.
