Stonehill Splits A Pair Of Matches At Riverfront Hotel Grand Rapids Classic

ALLENDALE, Mich. (September 7, 2012) – The Stonehill College women's volleyball team split a pair of non-conference matches on day one of the Riverfront Hotel Grand Rapids Classic on Friday afternoon at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. The Skyhawks dropped a 3-0 decision to Wisconsin-Parkside by scores of 25-21, 25-16 and 25-20 but bounced back against Notre Dame (Ohio) College, 3-0, by scores of 25-17, 25-19 and 25-12.

Freshman outside hitter Kelsey Weymouth (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro) and sophomore right-side hitter Kirsten Arvidson (Andover, Mass./Andover) posted ten kills apiece to lead the offense.

Sophomore setter Emily Iverson (Elmhurst, Ill./York) turned in a double-double with 29 assists and 11 digs. Senior libero Erin Kelly (Tinley Park, Ill./Marist) paced the Skyhawks defensively with a team-high 12 digs. Kelly was also perfect on serve/receive going 14-for-14. Junior outside hitter Sydney Maxey (Hutto, Texas/Hutto) aided the offense with eight kills, seven digs, two assists, one service ace and one block assist.

The Rangers were guided by junior outside hitter Bridget Nickel (Waupun, Wisc./Waupun) who led all players in kills with 12. Nickel also added eight digs, three block assists, three service aces and one assist.

Junior Chelsea Neave (Trevor, Wisc./Westosha Central) and senior Tricia Tirabassi (Kenosha, Wisc./Kenosha Tremper) shared the setting duties as Neave compiled 15 helpers (.938 percentage) while Tirabassi recorded 14 assists.

Wisconsin-Parkside (4-1 overall) notched a .260 hitting percentage, 52 digs, 37 assists and nine team blocks (12 block assists). Stonehill combined for a .122 hitting percentage, 42 digs, 34 assists and four team blocks (six block assists). The Rangers were efficient on both sides of the ball only committing 20 errors total (13 attack, four service, two receive, one blocking) while the Skyhawks registered 36 errors.

Sophomore middle blocker Mary-Kate Catton (San Diego, Calif./Academy of Our Lady of Peace) led all players in kills with ten and added three blocks (four block assists) to pace the Skyhawks in their second match of the day. Sophomore middle Meaghan Lee (Hanover, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) chipped in with nine kills while Arvidson and Weymouth had six each.

Iverson facilitated the offense with a match-high 33 assists that all resulted in kills (33-for-33). Iverson also added seven assists, three kills and one block assist.

Kelly led the team with a match-high ten digs while freshman outside hitter Delia Phillips (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown East) had five kills, two service aces and six digs.

Stonehill compiled a .274 hitting percentage, 42 digs, 39 assists, eight service aces and six team blocks (ten block assists). The Falcons combined to hit .048 on the afternoon, turned in 31 digs and had 20 assists.

Sophomore setter Chandler Mass (Calvert County, Md./Northern) dished out 18 assists while Brianne Schmansky (Westland, Mich./Livonia Churchill) and Suzanne Morris (Mesa, Ariz./Yavapai College) tied for the team-high in kills with five apiece.

Stonehill (2-1, 0-0 NE-10) returns to action tomorrow in day two of the Riverfront Hotel Grand Rapids Classic with its first match against tournament host          Grand Valley State University at noon. The Skyhawks wrap up their trip to Allendale, Michigan versus Barry University at 4 p.m.
