Skyhawks honor senior captain and libero Erin Kelly before match

Senior captain and libero Erin Kelly tallied 14 digs on "Senior Day."

EASTON, Mass. (November 3, 2012) – The Stonehill College women's volleyball team took set one 25-23 but the University of New Haven Chargers bounced back taking the next three sets to claim a 3-1 victory over the Skyhawks on "Senior Day" in Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) action on Saturday afternoon at Merkert Gymnasium.

Before the match, senior captain and libero Erin Kelly (Tinley Park, Ill./Marist) was honored for her contributions towards the Stonehill College women's volleyball program. Kelly finished second on the team in digs in her final regular season home match of her career with 14 alongside four assists, two service aces and one kill.

The Skyhawks received double-digit kill efforts from five different players with freshman outside hitter Delia Phillips (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown East) and junior right-side hitter Kirsten Arvidson (Andover, Mass./Andover) tying for the team-lead in putaways with 11 on the afternoon.

Sophomores Mary-Kate Catton (San Diego, Calif./Academy of Our Lady of Peace) and Meaghan Lee (Hanover, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) posted ten kills while junior outside hitter Sydney Maxey (Hutto, Texas/Hutto) turned in her sixth double-double of the season on ten kills and 13 digs.

Sophomore setter Emily Iverson (Elmhurst, Ill./York) dished out 45 assists, compiled 11 digs, six kills and one block assist. Iverson's double-double effort is her 14^th overall this season, a team-leading figure.

For the Chargers, senior outside hitter Keidy Candelaria (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico/Bayamon Military Academy) led all players with 16 kills, 12 digs, two assists and two block assists. Junior middle hitter Amber Cannady (Yonkers, N.Y./Charles E. Gordon) collected 14 kills (.345 hitting percentage), 11 block assists and one dig. Sophomore middle hitter Kristy Atufunwa (Denver, Colo./Denver East) registered ten kills (.381 hitting percentage) and two block assists.

Freshman defensive specialist Kea-Marie Olaso (Kailua, Hawaii/Le Jardin Academy) recorded a match-high 26 digs and sophomore setter Kualana Ane (Paia, Hawaii/Kamehameha) tallied a match-high 46 assists, 13 digs, five block assists and four kills.

Tied 17-17 in set one, Stonehill took its only lead in the game and held onto it after Maxey and Lee hammered home back-to-back kills off sets from Iverson. The Skyhawks then used four putaways (two from Maxey and one each from Catton and Lee) and a pair of errors from the Chargers to close out the first set victory.

Stonehill held a 23-22 lead in set two but kills from Candelaria and consecutive attacking errors from the Skyhawks down the stretch let game two slip away at a 26-24 score.

In set three, the Chargers posted their highest hitting percentage of the match (.300) and highest kills total (16) as well to push ahead 2-1. Set four featured 12 tied scores and five lead changes with New Haven breaking the final tie of the game at 21-21 with a kill from Candelaria. The Skyhawks trimmed the deficit to one point twice on kills from Kelly and Arvidson before falling in set four, 25-23, on a block assist from Atufunwa and Ashley Dalton (Helena, Montana/Capital/Northern Arizona).

Stonehill (12-14, 6-8 NE-10) visits UMass Lowell on Tuesday, November 6 at 7 p.m. New Haven (21-1, 12-0 NE-10) hosts American International College on Monday, November 5 at 7 p.m.
