Martin earns Player of the Week honors for the third time

EASTON, Mass. (September 29, 2013) – The Stonehill College women's tennis team has swept the Northeast-10 Conference weekly honors the league office has announced.

Senior captain Kaitlyn Martin (Mattapoisett, Mass./Medway) earned Player of the Week honors from the Northeast-10 for the third time in her career, while freshman Lorraine Smith (Littleton, Colo./D'Evelyn) received Rookie of the Week honors following her debut week at Stonehill.

Martin reached the B-singles semifinals and B-doubles final at the United States Tennis Association (USTA)/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional in Philadelphia, Pa., and also helped lead Stonehill to a pair of dual match victories for the week. Martin was a combined 11-3 in singles and doubles play for the week, winning four matches in the B-singles bracket at the ITAs before falling to University of District of Columbia's Peerada Looareesuwan, 8-2 in the finals. She also combined with sophomore Kirsti Toegemann (Narragansett, R.I./The Lincoln School) to win four matches in the B-doubles bracket before being edged 6-4, 6-4 in the final to Merrimack College's Kara Hole and Chealsey Giatrelis.

Martin was a combined 3-1 in singles and doubles play in Stonehill's two dual match victories over Franklin Pierce University and Holy Family University, ranked tenth in the ITA East Regional rankings, to open its fall schedule. She and Toegemann won both of their matches at No. 1 doubles and Martin also added an 8-0 win at No. 5 singles at Franklin Pierce.

Martin and Toegemann are 6-1 overall through the first two weeks of the season for Stonehill, including a 2-0 mark at No. 1 doubles. Martin is also 5-2 in singles play so far this season, including a 1-0 NE-10 clip.

Martin, a three-time All-Northeast-10 Conference selection over the course of her career, holds a combined 105-30 (.778) in singles and doubles play over her career, picking up her 100th career win at the ITA East Regional. She has posted a 51-15 (.723) career singles record, including a 28-2 (.933) mark in NE-10 play, while going a combined 54-15 (.783) in doubles play, including 23-3 (.885) in NE-10 matches. Martin was a first team All-NE-10 performer for the first time at No. 5 singles last spring, having also earned third team honors at No. 5 singles and second team accolades at No. 2 doubles with former teammate Leah White as a freshman when she was also named to the All-Rookie team. Martin was a three time NE-10 Rookie of the Week as a freshman and has also received NE-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll accolades multiple semesters.

Smith got her collegiate career off to a strong start by posting a 4-1 singles record while competing at the USTA/ITA East Regional and also helping Stonehill to a pair of dual match victories. She won both of her matches at No. 6 singles in dual match wins at Franklin Pierce and Holy Family, while also picking up a play-in round win in the B-singles bracket at the ITA East Regional. Smith rolled to an 8-0 pro-set win over Franklin Pierce's Christine's Boulanger and then posted an 8-5 victory over Casey Borish from Holy Family.

Smith is now a combined 5-1 in singles and doubles play in her first collegiate season. In addition to her 4-1 singles mark, she has teamed up with sophomore Caitlin McKinney (Braintree, Mass./Braintree) for a win at No. 3 doubles.

Smith comes to Stonehill after a standout career at D'Evelyn High School in Denver, Colo. She was a four-time All-Jefferson County League first team and four-time Colorado State Qualifier.

Stonehill (3-0, 1-0 NE-10), ranked fifth in the ITA East Regional rankings, is back in action on Tuesday when it visits College of the Holy Cross for a non-conference matchup at 3 p.m. The Skyhawks return home to host The College of Saint Rose for an NE-10 matchup at Charles Watt Tennis Courts at 3 p.m.
