Stonehill Rebounds at New Haven, 8-1


Sophomore Bailey Paradiso picked up wins at No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles on Thursday.

Paradiso leads Skyhawks with wins at No. 1 doubles, No. 2 singles 

WOODBRIDGE, Conn. (October 3, 2013) – Stonehill College, ranked fifth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, bounced back from a tough defeat on Tuesday to claim an 8-1 victory over the University of New Haven in Northeast-10 Conference women's tennis action at Amity High School this afternoon.

Sophomore Bailey Paradiso (Birmingham, Mich./Marian), the 12th-ranked singles player in the East Region by the ITA, led the double-winners for Stonehill, dropping just two games in three combined sets of play between singles and doubles. She teamed up with sophomore Kirsti Toegemann (Narragansett, R.I./The Lincoln School), ranked 15th in the region, for an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles and then cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles over New Haven junior Lindsey Conley (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury).

Junior Meryl Lawrence (North Scituate, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) and sophomore Analise Kump (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) both won a pair of matches today, starting by combining for an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles. Lawrence added a 6-2, 6-4 decision over sophomore Alexandra Sharshakov (Reisterstown, Md./Garrison Forest) at No. 3 singles, while Kump blanked sophomore Samantha Nigri (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4.

Senior Kaitlyn Martin (Mattapoisett, Mass./Medway) rounded out the double-winners for Stonehill with a 6-0, 6-0 win over freshman Sarah Burzin (Ivoryton, Conn./Valley Regional) at No. 5 singles after combining with freshman Amanda DePasquale (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) for an 8-2 decision at No. 3 doubles. Freshman Lorraine Smith (Littleton, Colo./D'Evelyn) added a point for the Skyhawks with her 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles over senior Nan Sirihorachai (Plainsboro, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro North).

Sophomore Eva Rybka (Berlin, Conn./Berlin) collected New Haven's lone point when Toegemann retired while trailing 5-6 in the first set.

Stonehill (4-1, 2-0 NE-10) is off until next Wednesday, October 9, when it hosts The College of Saint Rose at Charles Watt Tennis Courts at 3 p.m. New Haven (3-1, 2-1 NE-10) visits Saint Rose on Sunday at 1 p.m.
