Stonehill Gains Big Road Win at Southern N.H., 6-3


Junior Meryl Lawrence earned wins at No. 3 singles and doubles to lead the Skyhawks past Southern N.H.

Skyhawks improve to 9-0 in NE-10 play behind two Lawrence wins 

MANCHESTER, N.H. (April 3, 2014) – Stonehill College, ranked ninth in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, remained unbeaten in Conference play with a big 6-3 victory over Southern New Hampshire University, ranked eighth in the region, in Northeast-10 Conference women's tennis action at SNHU Tennis Courts this afternoon.

Junior Meryl Lawrence (North Scituate, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) led Stonehill to the win with victories at No. 3 singles and No. 3 doubles. She and junior Olivia Schneider (Rochester, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) claimed the Skyhawks lone doubles win with an 8-6 decision over sophomores Yolanda Green (Springfield, Mass./Longmeadow) and Allison Valentine (New Hartford, Conn./St. Paul Catholic). Lawrence followed by helping Stonehill take five of the six singles matches to claim the win by taking a back and forth 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win over junior Jamie Hann (Westhampton, N.Y./Westhampton Beach).


Freshman Lorraine Smith clinched the victory with her 6-0, 6-0 sweep at No. 6 singles.

Freshman Lorraine Smith (Littleton, Colo./D'Evelyn) clinched the win for Stonehill by blanking Valentine 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles. Sophomore Bailey Paradiso (Birmingham, Mich./Marian) rallied for a key 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 triumph at No. 2 singles against SNHU postgrad Sarah Schollgen (Meerbusch, Germany), while classmate Analise Kump (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) put the Skyhawks first singles point on the board with a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 4 over senior Kirsten Jean (Bedford, N.H./Bedford). Senior captain Kaitlyn Martin (Mattapoisett, Mass./Medway) rounded out the Skyhawks point winners with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles against Green.

Junior Diana Vamvakitis (Wading River, N.Y./Westhampton Beach) was a double-winner to lead Southern New Hampshire, playing a role in two of the Penmen's three wins. She and Schollgen teamed up for an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles against Paradiso and Martin. Vamvakitis, ranked 12th in the ITA East Region singles rankings, added a 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) victory over sophomore Kirsti Toegemann (Narragansett, R.I./The Lincoln School), ranked 20th in the region, at No. 1 singles for SNHU's lone singles point. Hann and Jean clinched a 2-1 Penmen lead after doubles play by edging Kump and Toegemann 9-8 (8-6) at No. 2.

Stonehill (15-3, 9-0 NE-10) is back in action on Saturday for another key NE-10 clash at Adelphi University at 10 a.m. The Skyhawks return home next Wednesday when it hosts Saint Michael's College their Purple & White match on Senior Day at 3 p.m. Southern New Hampshire (8-5, 4-2 NE-10) hosts the University on New Haven on Saturday at 1 p.m.
