Martin Leads Stonehill at USTA/ITA East Regional


Senior captain Kaitlyn Martin reached the B-Doubles final with sophomore Kirsti Toegemann and the B-Singles semifinals at the ITA East Regional this weekend.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (September 24, 2013) – Senior captain Kaitlyn Martin (Mattapoisett, Mass./Medway) led the Stonehill College contingent that competed at the United States Tennis Association (USTA)/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional hosted by Chestnut Hill College this weekend.

Martin and sophomore doubles partner Kirsti Toegemann (Narragansett, R.I./The Lincoln School) reached the final for the B-Doubles bracket, while Martin also advanced to the B-Singles semifinal round. Merrimack's doubles tandem of Kara Hole and Chealsey Giatrelis posted a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Martin and Toegemann in the B Doubles final. The Stonehill duo reached the final with an 8-1 triumph over Stephanie Rances and Gabrielle DiCroce from Molloy College in the semifinals. The Skyhawks opened with an 8-2 decision over another Molloy tandem of Tatiana Rajoana and Nikki Gloria in the first round and then topped Maria Jimenez and Camilla Linhart from Roberts Wesleyan University 8-1 in the second round. Martin and Toegemann followed that up with an 8-4 quarterfinal round victory against a team from American International College.

Martin, who also reached the B-Singles semifinals as a freshman, was defeated by University of District of Columbia sophomore Peerada Looareesuwan, 8-2, in Monday's semifinal. Martin reached the semis with an 8-5 win over American International College sophomore Ana Paula Simoes in the quarterfinals after posting an 8-5 win over Goldey-Beacom College freshman Nina Sengl in the round of 16. Martin opened the bracket with an 8-1 win in the first round and then topped Southern New Hampshire University sophomore Yolanda Green, 8-1, in the second round.


Sophomore Kirsti Toegemann teamed up with Martin to reach the B-Doubles final and also competed in the A-Singles Championship.

Toegemann, the 15th-ranked singles player in the East Region by the ITA, was seeded 12th in the A-Singles Championship and was defeated by freshman Melanie Benyadi from New York Tech, 6-3, 6-3 in the second round after receiving a first round bye. Sophomore Bailey Paradiso (Birmingham, Mich./Marian), ranked 12th in the East Region by the ITA, also competed in the A-Single Championship bracket and was edged by NYIT graduate student Madalina Florea 3-6, 6-1, 14-12 in the first round.

Paradiso and freshman Amanda DePasquale (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) reached the second round of the B-Doubles bracket with an 8-2 victory over senior Gabriela Chaves and freshman Raquel Santos from Goldey-Beacom in the first round. The Stonehill duo was then defeated by Hole and Giatrelis from Merrimack, 8-5.

Junior Meryl Lawrence (North Scituate, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) advanced to the B-Singles quarterfinals for the second time in three years before being dealt an 8-3 setback to Giatrelis from Merrimack, the eventual bracket winner. Lawrence swept Post University sophomore Colleen Rush 8-0 in the first round and then claimed an 8-1 victory over UDC senior Sofia Leon in the second. She advanced to the quarters with an 8-5 decision over Chestnut Hill College junior Morgan Oechsle.

Sophomore Analise Kump (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) advanced to the B-Singles Round of 16, opening with an 8-0 first round win over senior Tea Cadenovic from University of the Sciences. Kump then recorded an 8-4 victory against Goldey-Beacom junior Anastasia Melnikova in the second round before being defeated by Giatrelis from Merrimack, 8-3.

Kump and Lawrence had a first round bye in the B-Doubles bracket, but were edged by Oechsle and sophomore Axe Owens from Chestnut Hill in the second round, 9-7. Freshman Lorraine Smith (Littleton, Colo./D'Evelyn) rounded out the Skyhawks at the regional, posting an 8-3 first round win in the B-Singles bracket and then being defeated by Jimenez from Roberts Wesleyan, 8-4.

Stonehill (2-0, 1-0 NE-10), ranked fifth in the ITA East Regional rankings, is back in action on Thursday for its first home match of the fall season when it hosts Post University for a non-conference dual match at Charles Watt Tennis Courts at 3 p.m.
