Women's Soccer Earns First Win of the Season in Comeback Fashion Over Wagner

EASTON, Mass. (October 8, 2023) – The Stonehill College women's soccer team battled its way back to earn its first win of the season in comeback fashion over conference opponent Wagner College.  

Highlights

  • Junior Grace Caso scored the game winning goal in the 83rd minute, marking her team-leading third goal of the season.
  • Sophomore Hannah Anselmo and senior Meghan Lord each netted their first goals of the season.
  • First-year student Emma Cranston dished out her first career assist, while Anselmo recorded her team-leading third of the season on Caso's game winner.
  • Senior goalkeeper Mia Jackson earned her first win in net after making seven saves on the afternoon for Stonehill.
  • Graduate student Madison Carr led Wagner's offensive attack with a goal and an assist, while junior Emma Roe found the back of the net for the first time of the season.
  • Junior netminder Sam Hughes tallied five saves in goal for the Seahawks.

How it Happened

  • Wagner wasted little time getting the scoring started as Roe found the back of the net in the third minute of the game off an assist from Carr.
  • The Seahawks tacked one more goal on the board in the 30th minute on a penalty kick scored by Carr for her second point of the contest, extending the Wagner advantage to 2-0 on the board.
  • Less than two minutes later, Lord nearly cut the deficit in half after rocketing a shot from 25-yards out that would be punched away by the Seahawks goalkeeper, keeping Stonehill off the board heading into halftime.

  • After going back and forth over the next 20 minutes of action, Anselmo would draw a penalty kick attempt and score the game tying goal at the 74:00 mark of the match.
  • Caso capped off the comeback, scoring Stonehill's third goal of the second half after a perfect cross pass off the left side from Anselmo deflected off a defender and was booted into the top right corner of the net to seal the 3-2 victory for the Skyhawks.
