Jackson's nine save performance leads Skyhawks

EASTON, Mass. (August 17, 2023) – Senior goalkeeper Mia Jackson stood out in goal with a nine save performance as Stonehill College was edged by the University of New Hampshire, reigning champions of the America East Conference, in a season-opening non-conference women's soccer matchup at Tucker Field this afternoon.

How it Happened

  • Junior Meghan Guarente placed the lone goal of the match past Jackson off a turnover with a right-footed shot from the center of the penalty box into the lower right side of the net off a pass from the right side by postgrad Katie Oliver.
  • Jackson was otherwise the story of the match, keeping Stonehill in touch with a nine save performance, including five in the second half. She notched a pair of those stops in quick succession just past the hour mark.
  • Stonehill looked to place an equalizer past UNH sophomore goalkeeper Sally Rainey five minutes into the second half, but the goal was waived offside.
  • Rainey registered one save in posting the first shutout of her collegiate career.

Noteworthy

  • New Hampshire captured the America East Tournament Championship last fall to earn an NCAA Tournament bid and has been picked second in the America East preseason coaches' poll.
  • Jackson was making her sixth career start – her third at the NCAA Division I level for Stonehill. Her nine saves this afternoon finished just three shy of her career-best set with her 12-save effort at Wagner College last October.
  • Stonehill has been picked eighth in the NEC preseason coaches' poll after finishing sixth in its inaugural Division I season in 2022.
  • The Skyhawks are eligible for the NEC Tournament for the first time this fall.
