Skyhawks Softball Falls to UMass Lowell In Doubleheader

LOWELL, Massachusetts (April 25, 2023)- Today, the Stonehill College softball team hosted a non-conference doubleheader against the River Hawks of UMass Lowell, where the Skyhawks fought hard, but was bested by UMass in both games.

Game 1: The Skyhawks played their first game of the day with a 3 p.m. start, losing with a score of 0-2.

Key Moments:                           

  • The Skyhawks put up at battle throughout game one, but wasn't able to grab the win, as the River Hawks came out with strong defense, stopping Stonehill from making it home.
  • In the top of the sixth inning, centerfielder Natalie Bottiglieri stepped up to the plate and hit a single to center field, making it to first. Then, Bottiglieri made it to second off of a SAC bunt from second basemen Courtney BrochuBut shortly after, was thrown out in a double play at third.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, with the Skyhawks down by 2, third basemen Shannon Conte was up to bat, hitting a single to shortstop. But, the Skyhawks were stopped by the UMass defense to end the inning soon after.
  • Pitcher Kelly Mayette threw a solid game from the circle, throwing two strikeouts, 52 strikes, and having a '3 up, 3 down' in the bottom of the third inning.

Loss: Stonehill-  Kelly Mayette (104-52)


Game 2: The Skyhawks played their second game of the day right after with stronger hitting, almost snagging a win, but losing 2-3.

  • In the top of the third inning, with Bottiglieri on second, first basemen Paige Wodarski singles up the middle, sending Bottiglieri home, earning and RBI and putting the Skyhawks on the board.
  • Catcher Isabella Therrien was up to bat next, singling to left field and advancing Wodarski to second before the end of the inning.
  • In the top of the sixth inning, with two outs on the board, shortstop Emily Nardelli steps to home plate, hitting a deep ball over the fence, making that her second homerun of the season, earning an RBI and give the Skyhawks another run.
  • Pitcher Skylar Brandemarte pitched a great game for Stonehill, throwing a '3 up, 3 down' inning in the bottom of the second, four strikeouts, and throwing 57 strikes during the game.

Loss: Stonehill- Skylar Brandemarte (85-57)

The Stonehill Softball team plays next at home on Fr. Gartland field in Easton, Mass. tomorrow, Tuesday, April 26th for a doubleheader match-up against the University of Maine at 3pm & 5pm.
