Softball Grabs First Division I Win at Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (March 22, 2023)- Today, the Stonehill College softball team hit the road to Providence, Rhode Island to play against the Big East conference team Providence College at Glay Field. This was the Skyhawks' first Division I win in program history, where the Skyhawks put up three runs, winning the game by a score of 3-1.

Standout Performances:

Key Moments:

  • To start the game off, Providence hit a double in the bottom of the first to right field, bringing in an RBI and a single score for the team, leaving the Skyhawks down 0-1.
  • In the next inning, the Skyhawks shortstop Emily Nardelli stepped up to the plate, hitting a single to short and making it to first. Then, catcher Jessica Brill was up to bat, reaching first on a fielder's choice and advancing Nardelli to second.
  • Still in the top of the second, right fielder Megan Weis was out at first with a SAC bunt, pushing Brill and Nardelli to second and third. Following, Nardelli was able to make it home on a wild pitch and tied the game 1-1.
  • In the bottom of the second, the Skyhawks hit the field, making a double play from a Providence bunt caught by pitcher Skylar Brandemarte to then throw out the runner on second to second basemen Courtney Brochu.
  • In the top of the third, the Skyhawks had a runner on first and third, with Brochu making it to first on a bunt, advancing pinch-runner Maeve Proulx to home to give the Skyhawks the lead of 2-1.
  • In the top of the fourth inning, left-fielder Alexa Adinolfi hit a single, advancing to second on the throw, which allowed Weis to advance to third, scoring on a fielding error by Providence, continuing the lead to 3-1.
  • By the end of the game, Brandemarte pitched a solid game, throwing 78 strikes and six strikeouts, closing out the game for the Skyhawks with a win of 3-1.

Stonehill is back on the field this weekend in Staten Island, New York against Wagner College on Sunday, March 26th for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. & 3 p.m. and then Monday, March 27th at 11 a.m. After that, the Skyhawks host the College of the Holy Cross on Wednesday, March 29th for a doubleheader at 2 p.m. & 4:30 p.m.
