Softball Finishes Day 1 of FIU Classic in Miami

MIAMI, Fla. (March 3, 2023)- The Stonehill College softball team hopped on a flight for Miami, Florida to play in the FIU Classic, hosted by Florida International University, from March 3-8. The Skyhawks finished the tournament's first day in the sunshine state, where the team competed against two teams. 

GAME 1: They started the tournament off with a game against Stony Brook University, where the Skyhawks were defeated 10-1 after five innings of play.

Key Moments:

  • After starting the game with a solid first inning, sophomore pitcher Skylar Brandemarte threw 37 strikes, with pitcher Lauren Donovan stepping in to throw 31 to finish off the game.
  • In the bottom of the second inning, DP Alexa Adinolfi hit a double far into left center, advancing third basemen Shannon Conte to third. Leftfielder Megan Weis hit and grabbed an RBI for the Skyhawks, advancing Adinolfi to third and sending Shannon Conte home to score the first run of the game for Stonehill.
  • In the second inning, Stony Brook's catcher Badger hit a ball far and high for a home run, giving the Seawolves a 3-0 lead at the end of the second. As the game progressed, Badger hit two more home runs in the top of the third and fourth innings, totaling three home runs.

Win: Stony Brook- M. Haynes (63-49)

Loss: Stonehill- Skylar Brandemarte (56-37), Lauren Donovan (57-31)

GAME 2: Following the first game, the Skyhawks continued day one playing their second game against the host, Florida International University, where the game ended after 5 innings, finishing with a loss of 8-0.

Key Moments:

  • Pitcher Skylar Brandemarte started the first two innings off strong with 51 strikes before pitcher Kelly Mayette took over and threw 10 strikes.
  • Defensively, first baseman Alyssa Grossi had a good day in the field with two diving catches in a single inning, helping to close out the second inning. 
  • As the game progressed, the FIU Cougars scored eight runs throughout the game, including two runs from both Cougars Lansdell and Downing.

Loss: Stonehill- Skylar Brandemarte (71-51), Kelly Mayett (16-10)

Stonehill is on the field on March 4th for day 2 of the FIU Classic Tournament in Miami, Florida, hosted by Florida International University, where they will be starting off against the University of Nevada at 10 a.m.
