Stonehill Slugs Past Pace, 11-0 and 8-1

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. (March 23, 2013) – The Stonehill College softball team collected a pair of victories over the Pace University Setters in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup Saturday afternoon at Pace University in Pleasantville, N.Y.

Ruonavaara's complete-game shutout and two RBIs lead Stonehill to game one victory

Freshman Megan Ruonavaara (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill) went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs, and a run scored to lead the way for Stonehill. Lindsay McKillop (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) chipped in with a two-run home run for the Skyhawks.

Ruonavaara captured the fourth victory of her Skyhawk career, holding the Setters to just three hits in a five-inning shutout. Ruonavaara struck out two batters in the game, facing just 19 of a possible 15 batters.

Senior Chelsea Shea (Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) was tagged with the loss for the Setters. Shea pitched a complete game, giving up 11 runs (three earned) on 13 hits and one walk. Shea struck out one batter on the day.

The Skyhawks jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Freshman Alison Sumski (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) hit a lead-off single and advanced to second on an error by the center fielder. Kelsey Wilcox (Canterbury, Conn./Griswold) drove home Sumski when she singled to left field, giving the Skyhawks a one-run advantage.

After the Skyhawks grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second, they added to the lead in the third inning. With two outs in the third, Freshman Megan Staudle (New Windsor, N.Y./Cornwall Central) singled to second base. McKillop then stepped to the plate and launched her third home run of the season to give Stonehill a 4-0 lead.

The Skyhawks broke the game open in the fourth inning, adding seven runs to their lead. With runners on the corners, Sumski hit a sacrifice fly to drive in the fifth run of the game for the Skyhawks. Two batters later, with runners on first and second, Nicole Eisenmann (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater) hit an RBI-single to center. With the score 9-0, Ruonavaara added the final two runs of the game when she singled to center field, driving in Jocelynne Morrell (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) and McKillop.

Senior Nicole Eisenmann hit a solo home run in Stonehills game two victory

Staudle went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, and two RBIs to lead the Skyhawks in game two. Eisenmann and Wilcox also collected home runs for Stonehill, which has now won four games in a row.

McKillop collected her first win of the season for the Skyhawks. McKillop went the distance, giving up one run on five hits, while striking out one in the victory.

Senior Kelly Fisher (Castle Rock, Co./Douglas County) was saddled with the loss in game two. The Skyhawks earned eight earned runs on 13 his and four walks off of Fisher. Fisher struck out two in the loss.

Staudle opened the scoring for Stonehill in the second inning when she led off the inning with her fifth home run of the year.

The Skyhawks added three more in the third. Wilcox and Eisenmann hit back-to-back home runs to open the inning and give Stonehill a 3-0 lead. The Skyhawks got their other run when Brianna Gunter (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) hit a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing in McKillop.

Stonehill made it 6-0 in the fourth. With Sumski on second and Wilcox on first, Staudle roped an RBI-double down the left field line to score Sumski. McKillop plated Wilcox with a sacrifice fly to give Stonehill a six-run edge.

Pace scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the fifth. After Samantha Garcia (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga) singled and Erin Wood (Dover Plains, N.Y./Dover) doubled to put runners on second and third, Lana Buchbinder (San Francisco, Calif./George Washington) scored Garcia with a sacrifice fly.

Stonehill added runs in the sixth and the seventh to make the final score 8-1.

Stonehill (8-10, 2-0 NE-10) returns to action tomorrow afternoon with a double-header against Adelphi University beginning at 12:00 pm. Next up for Pace is pair of games tomorrow against Bentley, also beginning at 12:00 pm.
