Stonehill Splits With Southern New Hampshire, 3-1 and 9-7

MANCHESTER, N.H. (April 13, 2013) – The Stonehill College softball team split a pair of games with the Southern New Hampshire University Penmen in a Northeast-10 Conference double-header Saturday afternoon in Manchester, N.H. Southern New Hampshire took game one,3-1 and Stonehill took game two, 9-7.

Junior Cara Daly (Plainville, Mass./King Philip Regional) went 1-for-3 with a home run, two-RBI and a run scored to lead the way for the Penmen. Senior Kelsey Cheney (Abington, Mass./Abington) also earned an RBI for SNHU in the game one victory.

Senior captain Kelsey Wilcox (Canterbury, Conn./Griswold) produced the only run for Stonehill in game one. Wilcox went 1-for-3 with a solo home run for the Skyhawks in the loss.

Sophomore Ali Maloof (Norwood, Mass./Norwood) pitched a complete game to earn the victory for Southern New Hampshire. Maloof gave up one earned run on four hits, while striking out five to earn her eighth win of the season.

Stonehill freshman Megan Ruonavaara (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill) took the loss in game one. Ruonavaara went the distance, giving up three runs on five hits, while striking out four for Stonehill.

The Penmen got the scoring started with two runs in the second inning. With two outs and a runner on first, Daly launched her second home run of the season to give Southern New Hampshire a two-run lead.

SNHU added a run in the third to make it 3-0. Lindsay Bolduc (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) walked with one out in the third and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Cheney plated Bolduc when she hit a single later in the inning to give the Penmen a three-run advantage.

The Skyhawks cut the lead to 3-1 in the top of the fifth inning. Wilcox stepped to the place and hit a lead-off home run for the first Stonehill run.

The Skyhawks would get no closer though, as Maloof retired nine of the final ten batters she faced to clinch the win for the Penmen.

Senior Nicole Eisenmann (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater) went 2-for-3 with a home run, a single, two walks, and two-RBI to pilot the Skyhawks offense in game two. Wilcox, Jocelynne Morrell (West Haven, Conn./West Haven), Alison Sumski (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan), and Lindsay McKillop (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) also recorded RBIs for Stonehill in the win.

Senior Kate Stanley (Kingston, Mass./Silver Lake Regional) recorded two home runs and four RBI to pace the Penmen in game two. Senior Christy Jenkins (Hudson, Mass./Hudson) and Daly also hit homers for SNHU in the loss.

Ruonavaara pitched four innings of relief to earn the victory for Stonehill. The freshman yielded three earned runs on seven hits and four walks, while striking out two. Freshman Lauren Esposito (Middlefield, Conn./Coginchaug) got the start and pitched three innings in the second game. Esposito was charged with four earned runs on seven hits, walking none and striking out one.

The Skyhawks jumped out to a quick start with two runs in the first inning. After a lead-off walk by Sumski, Eisenmann launched her ninth home run of the season, making it 2-0 Stonehill.

Southern New Hampshire responded in the bottom of the inning to tie the score. With a runner first after a lead-off single, Stanley homered to make it 2-2.

Stonehill regained the lead, scoring three runs in the second. Sumski stepped to the plate with a runner on second a sprayed an RBI single, plating the Skyhawks' third run of the game. Following back-to-back walks, Sumski scored on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Wilcox hit an RBI-single to make it 5-2 Stonehill.

The score remained locked at 5-2 until the top of the fourth inning. With Eisenmann on second and Wilcox on first, Morrell roped an RBI-single to make it 6-2 Stonehill.

The Penmen stormed back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it a one run game. With one out in the inning, Daly and Jenkins hit back-to-back home runs to cut the lead to 6-4. Two singles and a walk later, Stanley forced a bases-loaded walk to make it 6-5.

The Skyhawks added to its lead in the fifth to make it 9-5. Eisenmann stepped to the plate with runners on second and first and one out and singled up the middle, scoring the seventh run for Stonehill. The Skyhawks then strung back-to-back RBI singles from McKillop and Wilcox to give them nine runs.

SNHU chipped away at the lead in the sixth. Following a Maloof triple to lead off the inning, Tesia Stanasek (Blackstone, Mass./Blackstone Valley Technical) scored Maloff when she grounded out to second base. The next batter, Stanley, hit a solo home run to center field, making it 9-7. Ruonavaara retired the final two batters in the sixth and then posted a scoreless seventh to preserve the win for Stonehill.

The Skyhawks (19-18, 11-7 NE-10) and Penmen (16-9, 9-4 NE-10) return to action Sunday afternoon at 12:00pm when the teams play another double-header.
