Stonehill Takes Two; Defeats Post and Felician, 6-1 and 4-3

Clermont, Fla. (March 6, 2013) – The Stonehill College softball team defeated the Post University Eagles and the Felician College Golden Falcons in a non-conference double-header at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla.

Senior Nicole Eisenmann (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater) went 1-3 and hit a three-run home run to pace the Skyhawks. Junior Jocelynne Morrell (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) also went 1-3 and drove in two RBIs for Stonehill.

Freshman Megan Ruonavaara (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill) posted her second win in as many days for the Skyhawks. Ruonavaara pitched a complete game, giving up one earned run on eight hits while striking out six.

Senior Johanna Rice (Glendale, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) was charged with the loss for the Eagles. Rice gave up six runs (zero earned) on ten hits.

The Skyhawks jumped out to an early first inning lead. Courtney Marchand (Raymond, N.H./Timberlane Regional) hit a lead-off single and Lindsay McKillop (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) and Megan Staudle (New Windsor, N.Y./Cornwall Central) reached on errors to load the bases, giving way for Morrell. Morrell took advantage of the opportunity and hit a two-run single to give the Skyhawks a 2-0 lead.

Stonehill kept its foot on the gas and added four runs in the second inning. After Brianna Gunter (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) scored on an error, Eisenmann stepped to the plate with two Skyhawks on base. The senior drove both runners home when she blasted her first home run of the year to make it 6-0.

Post grabbed a run in the third inning to cut Stonehill's lead to 6-1. Following back-to-back singles by Jackie Bonamassa (Staten Island, N.Y./Saint Joseph by-the-Sea) and Christina Udris (Levittown, Pa./Neshaminy), Casey Sclafani (Brooklyn, N.Y./Saint Edmund Prep) launched an RBI double to plate Bonamassa.

The Skyhawks shut down the Eagles after that, with Ruonavaara closing out Post to seal the victory for Stonehill.

Stonehill 4, Felician 3

Gunter went 1-3 and had two RBIs to lead the Skyhawks.  Eisenmann chipped in with a 3-3 outing, adding an RBI of her own.

Kelsi Ludwigsen (Havre de Grace, Md./Hartford Tech) had two hits and an RBI to pace the Golden Falcons. Ciera Clark (Granite Bay, Calif./Del Oro) and Zharde Sellona (Aliso Viejo, Calif./Aliso Niguel) also recorded RBIs for Felician.

Eisenmann was the pitcher of record for Stonehill, earning her first win of the season. Eisenmann pitched three innings, holding the Golden Falcons to three runs on three hits. Lauren Esposito (Middlefield, Conn./Coginchaug) started and pitched four innings, yielding three hits and two runs (one earned).

Kristen Tenwolde (Ramona, Calif./Ramona) was tagged with the loss for Felician. Tenwolde pitched a complete game, giving up four earned runs on 12 hits and two walks. The junior struck out six Skyhawks during the game.

Stonehill struck first in the top of the fourth. After Eisenmann hit a lead-off double and Staudle singled to center field, Morrell hit an RBI single through the left side. Gunter than bunted home Staudle to make it 2-0. Emily Padilla (Wappinger Falls, N.J./Roy C. Ketcham) closed the scoring with an RBI single of her to give the Skyhawks a three run lead.

Felician answered back in the bottom of the fourth. Taylor Parker (Surrey, B.C./Semiahmoo) and Ludwigsen singled and Katie Heflin (Escalon, Calif./Escalon) reached on an error to load the bases for Sellona. Sellona earned an RBI walk to put the Golden Falcons on the board.

Felician got two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game. Aimee Lopez (Riverbank, Calif./Riverbank) earned a lead-off walk and stole second to get in scoring position for Clark. Clark hit an RBI single, scoring Lopez. Alyssa Banca (East Rutherford, N.J./Becton Regional) pinch ran for Clark and advanced to second on a ground out before Ludwigsen tied the game with another RBI single.

The game would remain tied until the top of the seventh. Eisenmann led off the inning with a single and was moved to second on a Morrell ground out. Gunter roped a single up the middle to bring in Eisenmann for the winning run.

Stonehill (3-5, 0-0 NE-10) returns to action at 11:00 am on Friday for a double-header against the University of Sciences in Philadelphia and the University of Bridgeport. Next up for Post (4-4, 0-0 CACC) is a double-dip against Wayne State and Fort Hays tomorrow morning beginning at 9:00 am. Felician (4-8, 0-0 CACC) takes on Goldey-Beacom in a double-header Saturday March 16 at 1:00 pm.
