Stonehill Sweeps Bentley, 3-2 and 5-1

WALTHAM, Mass. (April 4, 2013) – The Stonehill College softball team collected a pair of wins Thursday afternoon against Bentley College in a NE-10 Conference Double-Header on the campus of Bentley College in Waltham, Mass.

Eisenmann's fifth inning RBI-single propels Stonehill to game one victory.

Senior Nicole Eisenmann (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater) led the way for Stonehill in game one. Eisenmann went 1-for-3 with the game-winning RBI single in the fifth. Junior Lindsay McKillop (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) also recorded an RBI-single for the Skyhawks.

Senior Erica Thibodeau (Cohoes, N.Y./Shaker) paced the Falcon offense, going with an RBI and a run scored. Junior outfielder, Jackie Gauthier (Braintree, Mass./Braintree) posted the other RBI for the Falcons, with a run-scoring triple in the sixth.

Freshman Megan Ruonavaara (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill) earned her sixth victory in her last six decisions for Stonehill in game one. Ruonavaara pitched a complete game, yielding five hits and two earned runs, while striking out six.

Senior Carly Taitz (Blue Point, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) took the loss for the Falcons. Taitz went 4.1 innings and gave up three runs (one earned) on six hits and two walks. Kelly Ferris (Seymour, Conn./Seymour) pitched the final two and two-thirds innings, holding the Skyhawks hitless and scoreless while fanning four.

After three scoreless innings of play, the Skyhawks got on the board in the top of the fourth. Eisenmann led off the inning reaching base when she was hit by a pitch. Emily Padilla (Wappinger Falls, N.J./Roy C. Ketcham) pinch-ran for her and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt before McKillop singled her home for the game's first run. McKillop scored two batters later when the center fielder misplayed a Jocelynne Morrell (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) singled to.

The Skyhawks added another run in the fifth inning to extend their lead to 3-0. Courtney Marchand (Raymond, N.H./Timberlane Regional) got it started when she reached on an error by the second baseman. The senior then stole second base before scoring on Eisenmann's RBI single.

Bentley scored two in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 3-2. With Shannon Connor (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) on first following a single, Thibodeau drove her in with a double to left field. Three batters later, Gauthier roped an RBI-triple to left center field to drive in the Falcon's second run of the game. But that was it for Bentley, as Ruonavaara got out of the sixth and shut down the Falcons in the seventh to earn the win.

Staudle leads Stonehill to game two victory with two-RBI performance


Freshman Megan Staudle went 2-for-4 with two-RBIs in the game two victory

Freshman Megan Staudle (New Windsor, N.Y./Cornwall Central) registered two-RBIs on 2-for-4 hitting to lead the way for Stonehill. Ruonavaara, Eisenmann, and Morrell also posted RBIs in the win.

Freshman pitcher Lauren Esposito (Middlefield, Conn./Coginchaug) collected her fourth victory of the year for the Skyhawks. Esposito went the distance, giving up just one earned run on five hits and one walk, while striking out two. 

Halley McDevitt (San Ramon, Claif./San Ramon Valley) started and took the loss for the Falcons. The freshman gave up three earned on five hits and three walks in three innings. Caitlin Betz (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) relieved McDevitt and pitched the final four innings for Bentley. Betz was tagged for two runs on five hits, while striking out one.

Stonehill jumped out to a 3-0 lead with three runs in the third. With Kelsey Wilcox (Canterbury, Conn./Griswold) on first, Eisenmann roped an RBI double to left field, scoring Wilcox for the first run of the game. Three batters later with Eisenmann on third and Ruonavaara on second, Staudle hit a RBI-single through the right side to plate Eisenmann. Morrell drove in the third run of the game when she grounded out to second base, scoring Ruonavaara.

The Skyhawks added two more runs in the fourth inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Ruonavaara hit a single to the third baseman, scoring the fourth run. Staudle connected on another RBI-single later in the inning to make it 5-0.

Bentley grabbed its only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth. Connor led-off the inning with a triple to right center field before Thibodeau plated her with an RBI-single later in the inning.

Stonehill (15-14, 5-1 NE-10 NE) returns to action to play host to Assumption College Saturday afternoon at 12:00 pm at Fr. William Gartland C.S.C Field in Easton, Mass. Next up for the Falcons is Saturday afternoon double-header with American International College at 12:00 pm in Waltham, Mass.
