Stonehill Drops Double-Header Against Wilmington and West Virginia Wesleyan

Clermont, Fla. (March 2, 2013) – The Stonehill College softball team dropped a pair of games to the Wilmington College Wildcats and the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats Saturday afternoon in Clermont, Fla.

Wilmington 4, Stonehill 3

Two runs in the ninth inning propels Wilmington to victory.

Senior Katie Warrington (Townsend, Del./Red Lion Christian Academy) pitched a complete game and earned the win for the Wildcats. Warrington struck out 10 batters and gave up five hits and three runs (one earned) in the outing.

Freshman Megan Ruonavaara (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill) was tagged with the loss in a 6.1 inning complete game. Ruonavaara gave up five hits, three walks, and four runs (one earned) and struck out seven in her collegiate debut.

The Wildcats struck first, grabbing two runs in the bottom of the third. With runners on first and second, Shelby Thompson (Newark, Del./Hodgson Vo-Tech) hit an RBI single to bring in Cambria Ziemba (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's). Emily Nowell (Wilmington, Del.,St. Mark's) scored the second run of the inning when Brook Ash (Millsboro, Del./Indian River) hit an RBI ground out to the shortstop.

The Skyhawks knotted the game in the fifth inning. Freshman Lauren Esposito (Middlefield, Conn./Coginchaug) reached base on an error by Warrington. Christina Swider (Hebron, Conn./RHAM) and Jocelyne Morrell (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) scored on the error, tying the game for Stonehill.

Nicole Eisenmann (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater) gave the Skyhawks a 3-2 lead in the sixth. With one out, Lindsay McKillop (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) tripled to center field. Eisenmann then hit an RBI single, bringing in Emily Padilla (Wappinger Falls, N.J./Roy C. Ketcham) who pinch ran for McKillop.

The Wildcats walked off with the win in the seventh. With runners on first and third, Ash hit an RBI single to center, tying the game 3-3. Brooke Berger (Ridley Park, Pa./Ridley) then reached on an error to score Thompson for the winning run and give Wilmington the win.

West Va. Wesleyan 9, Stonehill 1

Explosive fifth inning leads West Virginia Wesleyan to a 9-1 win.

Junior pitcher Jessica Griffin (Cooper City, Fla./Cooper City) earned a complete game victory for the Bobcats. Griffin struck out six batters, giving up three hits and one earned run in her second outing of the season.

McKillop was charged with the loss for Stonehill. She gave up nine runs (one earned) on seven hits over four innings. Eisenmann pitched the fifth inning, holding the Bobcats hitless.

Leading 2-0 after four the Bobcats blew the lead open in the fifth inning. Following a run on an error by the third-baseman, Paige Cummings (Acton, Calif./Varquez) made it 4-0 when she singled in Carleigh Hall (Riverton, Kan./Riverton). Megan Malenstyn (Surrey, B.C./Seaquam Secondary) extended Wesleyan's lead to 5-0 when she hit an RBI double. Following three more runs on errors, Ashley Hurey (Pittsburgh, Pa./West Allegheny) launched a sacrifice fly to left field bringing in Kaitlyn Carey (Orlando, Fla./Boone) and making it 9-0 in favor of the Bobcats.

In the bottom of the fifth, Stonehill managed to get one back. Kelsey Wilcox (Canterbury, Conn./Griswold) notched a leadoff double to put herself in scoring position. After Wilcox advanced to third on a wild pitch, Alison Sumski (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) hit an RBI single. Griffin closed the door for the Bobcats after that, retiring the final two batters of the game to give Wesleyan the victory.

Stonehill (0-2, 0-0 NE-10) returns to action tomorrow morning when it takes on Young Harris College for a double-header. The first game kicks off at 9:00 am, with the second game scheduled for 11:00 am. Wilmington takes on Dowling College and Saint Anselm College Sunday afternoon in a double-header starting at 11:00 am. Next up for Wesleyan is a double-dip with Wayne State College and Mary College beginning at 9:00 am.
