Stonehill Drops Double-Dip Against Young Harris, 14-8 and 12-8

Clermont, Fla. (March 3, 2013) – The Stonehill College softball team dropped a pair of games to Young Harris College Sunday afternoon at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla.

Young Harris 14, Stonehill 8

Six-run fifth pushes Young Harris to victory.

Brittany Henry (Murphy, N.C./Murphy) pitched four innings of relief to earn the victory for the Mountain Lions. Henry gave up two runs (zero earned) on three hits and struck out five batters in the victory. Henry relieved Katie-Jo Gentry (Calhoun, Ga./Sonoraville) who went the first three innings, giving up six runs (three earned) on nine hits.

Megan Ruonavaara (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill) was charged with the loss for Stonehill. Ruonavaara went four and two-thirds innings and gave up eight unearned runs on six hits and one walk.

Down 2-1 in the fourth, Stonehill erupted for four runs. Jocelynne Morrell (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) tripled to right field, bringing in Megan Staudle (New Windsor, N.Y./Cornwall Central) and Kelsey Wilcox (Canterbury, Conn./Griswold) to give Stonehill a 3-2 lead. After Morrell scored on a wild pitch and Courtney Marchand (Raymond, N.H./Timberlane Regional) singled and stole second, Lauren Esposito (Middlefield, Conn./Coginchaug) brought in Marchand with an RBI single to make it 5-1.

Young Harris responded with six runs of their own in the fifth. After Sydnee Weaver (Sylvania, Ga./Screven County) reached on an error, Kayla Jones (Covington, Ga./Eastside) tripled to right field, bringing home Weaver. Henry then homered scoring Jones and making it 5-4. The next batter Callie Holloway (Jefferson, Ga./Jefferson) doubled to left field, before Stacia Williams (Rome, Ga./Model) hit an RBI single to tie the game. After Sarah MaGill (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood) was hit by a pitch, Sarah Beth Marquis (Navarre, Fla./Navarre) hit a two-RBI double to right field to give the Mountain Lions a 6-5 lead.

Stonehill regained the lead in the bottom of the inning. After Wilcox singled, Staudle doubled to right field. Morrell brought home Wilcox and made it 6-6 when she hit an RBI single to right field. Emily Padilla (Wappinger Falls, N.J./Roy C. Ketcham) then grounded into a fielder's choice, scoring Staudle and giving Stonehill a 7-6 lead.

The Mountain Lions regained the lead for good in the top of the sixth. Henry hit a two-out single and then stole second and third. Holloway brought Henry in with an RBI single. After a Williams single, Magill singled home Holloway to make it 8-7 Young Harris. Marquis added three more runs when she homered to make it 11-7.

Young Harris never looked back and closed out the game to win 14-8.

Young Harris 12, Stonehill 8

Darby Stanford (Alpharette, Ga./Alpharette) pitched a complete game and earned the win for Young Harris to improve to 6-2 on the season. Stanford gave up eight runs (two earned) on nine hits and struck out five in the win.

Esposito got the start and was tagged for the loss. Esposito gave up seven earned runs on seven hits and one walk. Nicole Mellor (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) pitched a scoreless inning of relief, striking out one batter in a hitless seventh.

The Mountain Lions opened the scoring in the first inning. After weaver singled, Jones hit a two-run home run to give Young Harris a 2-0 lead.

Stonehill fired back in the top of the second. Wilcox reached on an error, followed by an Alison Sumski (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) double and a Brianna Gunter (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) bunt single to load the bases. Morrell put the Skyhawks on the board when she hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Wilcox. Stonehill got two more when Christina Swider (Hebron, Conn./RHAM) reached on an error by the pitcher, scoring Sumski and Gunter and making it 3-2.

Henry tied the game up for the Mountain Lions when she singled home Weaver in the third. Holloway singled in the go-ahead run to put Young Harris up 4-3. Williams made it 7-4 when she hit a three-run shot to score Holloway and Henry. Later in the inning Paige Sexton (Canton, Ga./Creekside) hit a two-RBI triple to give the Mountain Lions a 9-4 lead.

Stonehill would get three runs in the fourth and one run in the seventh, but Young Harris would hold on to win 12-4.

Next up for the Skyhawks (0-4, 0-0 NE-10) is a pair of games tomorrow against Concordia College and Findlay University beginning at 11:00 am. Young Harris faces off against Dominican for a double-header tomorrow morning starting at 9:00 am.
