Skyhawks junior rallies for three-set win at No. 6 singles to clinch key win

EASTON, Mass. (March 22, 2013) – Stonehill College, ranked tenth in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional rankings released on Wednesday, hung on for a huge 5-4 victory over Adelphi University, ranked eighth in the region, in Northeast-10 Conference men's tennis action at Sally Blair Ames Sports Complex this afternoon.

Junior Brett Armstrong (Manville, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) led Stonehill to the win as a double-winner, clinching the victory with a gutsy 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-1) comeback win over Adelphi sophomore Chiwete Njokanma (Lagos, Nigeria) in the final match on the court at No. 6 singles. Armstrong also combined with freshman Philip Klados (Lake Forest, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) with an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles as the Skyhawks swept the three doubles matches.

Klados also claimed a singles point for Stonehill with his 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 victory over Adelphi freshman Alan Chocron (Aventura, Fla./Dr. Michael Krop) at No. 4. Senior Chris Martin (Darien, Conn./Darien) and sophomore Eric Ringstad (Fairbanks, Alaska/Monroe Catholic) notched an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles, while junior Nick Hyzak (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) and sophomore Thomas Alaimo (North Andover, Mass./Central Catholic) teamed up for an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles.

Adelphi rallied from the three point hole after doubles play to shift the pressure to the No. 6 singles match by winning four of the first five singles matches completed. Senior Andreas Hammar (Norrtalje, Sweden), the reigning NE-10 Player of the Year and region's 17th-ranked singles player, posted a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles over Ringstad. Senior Bryan Kallenberg (Port Washington, N.Y./Nassau CC) followed with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 comeback win over Hyzak at No. 2 and then freshman Sander Brenner (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber) clinched a 6-2, 6-3 decision over Alaimo at No. 3. Freshman Boris Tiberkov (Miami, Fla./Michael Krop) evened the match at four points apiece with his 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles over Martin.

Stonehill (11-4, 4-1 NE-10) is right back in action tomorrow when it visits American International College for a Northeast-10 matchup at 1 p.m. The Skyhawks are back home on Sunday to host Roger Williams College for a non-conference clash at 3 p.m. Adelphi (6-5, 2-1 NE-10) hosts Saint Michael's College tomorrow at noon.
