Stonehill Notches Key Regional Win at Chestnut Hill, 5-4

Double-winner Armstrong leads the way for Skyhawks

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (September 21, 2012) – Stonehill College won two of three doubles matches on its way to a big 5-4 victory over Chestnut Hill College as both teams are tied for eighth in the ITA East Regional rankings in non-conference men's tennis action at Chestnut Hill Tennis Courts this afternoon.

Junior Brett Armstrong (Manville, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) was a double-winner to lead Stonehill to the big early season win. He posted a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles over Chestnut Hill senior Patrick Villafuerte-Joson (Old Bridge, N.J./Bishop George Ahr). Armstrong also combined with sophomore Thomas Alaimo (North Andover, Mass./Central Catholic) for a big 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles to clinch the Skyhawks second doubles victory.

Senior Chris Martin (Darien, Conn./Darien) delivered the clinching point for Stonehill with his back and forth 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 victory over freshman Kevin Taylor at No. 5 singles. Freshman Philip Klados (Lake Forest, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) breezed to a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles over sophomore Steven Say (Cannes, France). Junior Nick Hyzak (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) and sophomore Eric Ringstad (Fairbanks, Alaska/Monroe Catholic) combined for an 8-3 triumph for Stonehill at No. 1 doubles.

Junior Anthony Moore was a double-winner for Chestnut Hill. He claimed a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Alaimo at No. 2 singles after combining with Taylor for an 8-4 decision at No. 2 doubles. Sophomore Michael Humes (Medford, N.J./Lenape), the 19th-ranked singles player in the East Region, picked up a point for the Griffins with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Ringstad at No. 1 singles. Junior Manuel Ceniceros (Mexico City, Mexico) rallied for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Hyzak at No. 4 singles.

Stonehill (4-0, 2-0 NE-10) and Chestnut Hill (1-1, 1-0 CACC) will both participate in the ITA East Regional tomorrow through Monday. Stonehill returns home on Saturday, September 29, when it hosts Saint Michael's College for an NE-10 matchup at 11 a.m.
