Stonehill Competes at ITA East Regional

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (September 24, 2012) – Junior Brett Armstrong (Manville, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) and sophomore Thomas Alaimo (North Andover, Mass./Central Catholic) combined to reach the semifinal round of the B-Flight Doubles Championship to highlight Stonehill College's weekend at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional, hosted by the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) at Legacy Youth Tennis and Education Center this weekend.

Alaimo and Armstrong won three matches, including an 8-5 decision over teammates Nick Hyzak (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) and Philip Klados (Lake Forest, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) in the quarterfinal round. Alaimo and Armstrong were defeated by Anthony Moore and Kevin Taylor from Chestnut Hill College in Sunday's semifinal round. The Skyhawk duo opened with an 8-2 victory over Paul Bedway and Paul Garcia from the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia in the first round before topping Beka Buchukuri and Robert Beer from Roberts Wesleyan College, 8-4 in the Round of 16.

Armstrong also reached the Round of 16 for the B-Singles bracket before being edged by University of the Sciences sophomore Steven Gelarkin, 8-6. He earned a first round bye before topping Roberts Wesleyan sophomore Emmanuel Rauchle in the second round.

Alaimo was a first round victim in the Championship Singles flight, falling to Merrimack College freshman Matt Lipinski, 6-4, 6-4. Sophomore Eric Ringstad (Fairbanks, Alaska/Monroe Catholic) also fell in the first round of the Championship singles bracket with a 6-2, 6-3 setback to Roberts Wesleyan freshman Charlie Farres. Ringstad and senior Chris Martin (Darien, Conn./Darien) were eliminated in the first round of the Championship Doubles bracket by Farres and junior Julio Toledo-Lopez from Roberts Wesleyan, 8-4.

Martin reached the second round of the B-Flight singles tournament, opening with an 8-0 sweep of Chestnut Hill's Sim Hereen before being defeated by American International College freshman Thijs Bik, 8-6, who would go on to win the B-Flight event.

Hyzak and Klados opened the B-doubles bracket with an 8-0 sweep of Post University's Mateus Garcia and Dreshawn Lewis in the first round. They followed that up with an 8-4 decision over Gelarkin and William Metz of USP before being defeated by Alaimo and Armstrong in the quarterfinals.

Hyzak reached the quarterfinals of the B-Singles bracket before falling to University of District of Columbia freshman Fabian Patrutesco, 8-2. Hyzak opened with an 8-3 win over University of the Science junior Joshua Garcia before defeating Adelphi University freshman Alan Chocron, 8-6 in the second. He posted an 8-1 victory over USP freshman Peter Micu in the Round of 16 before being topped in the quarters.

Klados joined Armstrong in reaching the B-Singles Round of 16 as he opened with an 8-3 victory over Adelphi sophomore Ryan Villarruel in the first round. He followed that up with an 8-3 decision over Dowling College's Francisco Del Castillo in the second round before being eliminated by District of Columbia junior Carlos Quiroga, 8-2.

Sophomore Jared Drzal (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) posted an 8-1 first round win over Garcia from Post in the B-Singles bracket before being defeated by Dowling's Sardorjan Mamadjanov, 8-0 in the second round. Classmate Jonathan Sanders (Holbrook, N.Y./St. Anthony's) was a first round victim in the B-Singles bracket, falling to Merrimack senior Chris Toegemann, 8-4. Drzal and Sanders also fell in the first round of the B-Doubles bracket, 8-4, to Adelphi's Andreas Hammar and Chocron.

Stonehill (4-0, 2-0 NE-10), ranked eighth in the ITA Division II East Regional rankings, is back in action on Saturday when it returns to Northeast-10 Conference play to host Saint Michael's College at Charles Watt Tennis Courts at 11 a.m.
