Panthers sweep top five singles flights after winning two of three in doubles
ORLANDO, Fla. (March 6, 2013) – Ohio Dominican University posted a 7-2 victory over Stonehill College, ranked ninth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional rankings, in non-conference men's tennis action at Lake Cane Tennis Center this afternoon.
Juniors Tyler Johnston (Wilmington, Ohio/Wilmington) and Jeremy Mokry (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) and freshmen Walid Gtari (Tunis, Tunisia) and Justin Tjon (Willemstad, Curacao) were all double-winners for Ohio Dominican. Sophomore Gerardo Perez (Mexico City, Mexico) also collected a point with his 6-7 (7-5), 6-4, 10-6 victory over Stonehill senior Chris Martin (Darien, Conn./Darien) at No. 5 singles.
Gtari and Tjon combined for an 8-0 sweep at No. 1 doubles. Gtari followed with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles over Stonehill sophomore Eric Ringstad (Fairbanks, Alaska/Monroe Catholic), while Tjon topped sophomore Thomas Alaimo (North Andover, Mass./Central Catholic) 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4 singles.
Johnston and Mokry claimed an 8-2 victory at No. 3 doubles before Johnston topped junior Nick Hyzak (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) 6-3, 7-5 at No. 2 singles. Mokry defeated freshman Philip Klados (Lake Forest, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) 7-5, 6-4 at No. 3 singles.
Hyzak and Martin teamed up to post Stonehill's lone doubles win with an 8-6 decision over Perez and sophomore Patrick Ohanian (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) at No. 2 doubles. Junior Brett Armstrong (Manville, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles for the Skyhawks over freshman Josh Byerly (Delaware, Ohio/Delaware Hayes).
Stonehill (8-2, 3-0 NE-10) closes out its spring break schedule on Friday when it faces Cedarville (Ohio) College at Fort Gatlin Tennis Center in Orlando at 11 a.m. The Skyhawks next home game is Thursday, March 14, when they host Eastern Nazarene College at 3:30 p.m. Ohio Dominican (3-7, 0-3 GLIAC) faces Montana State-Billings in a second match of the day this evening at 7 p.m.
