Roberts Wesleyan Defeats Stonehill, 6-3

Farres and Thorold lead Redhawks to non-conference win

EASTON, Mass. (April 7, 2013) – Roberts Wesleyan College expanded on a 2-1 advantage after doubles play to claim a 6-3 victory over Stonehill College, ranked eighth in the NCAA Division II East Regional rankings and tenth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East rankings, in non-conference men's tennis action at Charles Watt Tennis Courts today.

Freshmen Charles Farres (Portsmouth, England) and Sam Thorold (Leicester, England) were double-winners to lead Roberts Wesleyan to its second-straight win. The duo posted an 8-5 victory at No. 1 doubles as the Redhawks took two of three doubles matches to gain an early advantage in the dual match before sweeping the bottom four singles matches. Farres added a 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) decision at No. 3 singles over Stonehill sophomore Thomas Alaimo (North Andover, Mass./Central Catholic), while Thorold topped freshman Philip Klados (Lake Forest, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) 6-1, 6-4 at No. 4.

Freshman Robert Beer (Toronto, Ontario) posted a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 5 singles over senior Chris Martin (Darien, Conn./Darien), while sophomore Emanuel Rauchle (Buenos Aires, Argentina) defeated junior Brett Armstrong (Manville, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 6-2. Junior Julio Toledo (Minatitlan, Mexico) and senior Jordan Sadowitz (Syracuse, N.Y.) teamed up for an 8-5 decision at No. 3 doubles for the Redhawks.

Junior Nick Hyzak (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) was a double-winner for Stonehill as he posted a back and forth 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 victory at No. 2 singles over Toledo after teaming up with Alaimo for an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles. Sophomore Eric Ringstad (Fairbanks, Alaska/Monroe Catholic) notched the remaining point for the Skyhawks with his 6-1, 6-1 victory over junior Beka Buchukuri (Tbilisi, Georgia) at No. 1 singles.

Stonehill (14-6, 6-1 NE-10) returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Post University for a non-conference matchup at Watt Courts at 4 p.m. Roberts Wesleyan (15-4, 2-1 ECC) hosts New York Institute of Technology on Friday.
