Bears notch key regional win behind four double-winners
EASTON, Mass. (March 17, 2013) – New York Institute of Technology, ranked fifth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, collected a 9-0 decision over Stonehill College, ranked ninth in the region, in a key non-conference matchup at Sally Blair Ames Sports Complex this afternoon.
Freshman Jamie Salvador (Zargoza, Spain) and sophomore Tomas Lieb (Buenos Aires, Argentina) led NYIT to the victory as double winners. Salvador posted a hard-fought 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 victory over Stonehill junior Nick Hyzak (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) at No. 2 singles after teaming up with sophomore Nicolos Jubera (Lo Rioja, Spain) to edge Hyzak and sophomore Thomas Alaimo (North Andover, Mass./Central Catholic) at No. 2 doubles, 8-6. Jubera was also a double-winner for the Bears, adding a 6-4, 6-3 win over senior Chris Martin (Darien, Conn./Darien) at No. 5 singles.
Lieb teamed up with junior Mircea Dimofte (Focsani, Romania) to edge Martin and sophomore Eric Ringstad (Fairbanks, Alaska/Monroe Catholic) at No. 1 doubles, 9-7. Lieb then added a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles over freshman Philip Klados (Lake Forest, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic). Junior Julian Marcon (Nandrin, Belgium) rounded out the double-winners for NYIT with a back and forth 6-2, 4-6, 11-9 decision over junior Brett Armstrong (Manville, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) at No. 6 singles after teaming up with sophomore Eduardo Maurtua (Lima, Peru) for an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles.
Stonehill (10-3, 3-0 NE-10) is back in action on Wednesday when it returns to Northeast-10 Conference play to host Bentley University, ranked sixth in the region, at 3:30 p.m. NYIT (6-2, 0-0 ECC) heads for spring break and will visit Eckerd College on Wednesday at 11 a.m.
